BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma Continues the Magic Rebellion


Arc System Works releases a new BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma trailer, featuring three new characters.

BlazBlue, the 2D fighting series from Arc System Works, is about to get another installment. BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma, featuring three new characters, changed skill sets, backgrounds and musical changes, has been announced as a 2012 release.

The three new characters are Amane Nishiki, Bullet and Azrael, who join the cast regulars in their ongoing battles to overthrow or defend the magic-wielding overlords of the Novus Orbis Librarium. Other than snippets very little has been revealed about this title; its designer, Toshimichi Mori, has confirmed its existence on Twitter [https://twitter.com/zatuyoP/status/232046267671384064], but - apart from the Tweets and the trailer - Arc System Works is keeping its secrets to itself.

This will be released for Japanese arcades in Winter 2012. Those who want to get in on the ground floor had best hit Akihabara's Hey arcade [http://www.cnngo.com/tokyo/play/4-best-tokyo-arcades-424517], as that's where the game will see its test run from August 6th to 12th. Previous BlazBlue installments have been released as Xbox and PS3 games, so there's reason to hope it will emerge from the arcades eventually.

Arc System Works is a Japanese game studio best known for its fighting game series, Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Earlier this year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115432-Guilty-Gear-Dev-Wants-to-Make-the-Games-Western-Devs-Cant] designer Daisuke Ishiwatari said that the best way forward for the company was to embrace and emphasise its Japanese roots. "Arc can't make FPSes or RTSes," said Ishiwatari, "but I want it such that the fighters we make can't be duplicated by overseas developers." Judging by this trailer, Arc System Works is following through on that idea.

HOLY CRAP YES! Granted, I am kinda disapointed that Kokonoe still isn't playable and there seems to be no character with Nu's/Lambda's moveset, but hey, there'll be more trailers to come. And I freaking love Noel's new look. But that thing right at the end... if I got my lore right, that's basically, a Nox Nyctores killer satilite WMD thing, and I think that laughing is Terumi. Looks like the stakes on this one will be high...

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring too. I heard something about an "overdrive mode" on the wiki for each character, which would unlock new moves, so maybe that'll have something to do with the new distortions, me thinks.

I was expecting some other characters to be playable, such as Jubei, but then again there'll be more trailers to come more likely. I try my best not to get hyped for games so early on, but it's so hard...

Well, Calamity Trigger reffered to Nu, given how she's nearly unleashed the Black Beast. Continuum Shift reffered to the multiple timelines being desroyed, leaving only the main, "cannon" story. Chrono Phantasma, something to do with time and ghosts... there is a character called Phantom, so maybe she's gonna be important.

System

Gold Bursts have been removed, replaced with Overdrive.
Green Bursts work as before.
Crush Trigger: Pressing A+B during certain attacks will break your opponent?s guard (unless they?re using Barrier). This costs 25% Heat.



Overdrive Details

Builds up over time, activated with ABCD.
Increases attack power(?) and grants character-specific benefits.
Duration depends on your health.
Freezes the timer when used.

Jin: Frost End ? Yukianesa attacks freeze the opponent.
Noel: Chain Quasar ? Increases speed of Drive moves.

Heard about this yesterday as well, and I'm still pretty hyped. Definitely gonna be giving Azrael a shot once this hits consoles. Looks like he hits like a truck, and those short-range teleports...if those are his dashes then I'm sold. Still gonna stick with Tsubaki, though =P

Noel's never as been as flat as the game wants you to think she is.
You have to remember this anime-style where anything less than "Smuggling Cantaloupe" is considered "Flat as a Board".

Its mostly that her previous outfit didn't really emphasize her rack, and everyone in game seems to constantly call out the fact that she's apparently "flat", despite the fact that she's not.

Actually, it's more akin to Dissidias EX modes. X-factor just made you stupid strong, it didn't give a character any specific perks to go with that boost.

That has me concerned...some of those ODs (fuck you platinum) are a little crazy. BB did fine without a silly come back mechanic, though I will trust Aksys to balance them well to not be as retarded as X-factor or whatever.

Dunno how I feel about crush triggers, have to see it in action before I can have an opinion on them. Though this mention of crush trigger has pretty much confirmed the ditching of Guard primer system.
