Bloodborne - Approaching Mob Fights

Yo,

I've just plunged into Bloodborne, and as someone who has played both Dark Souls and Dark Souls II, i knew going in the fights would be different. however, i wasnt expecting it to be THIS punishing. other then the old adage, "git gud scrub" how do you approach the mobs, because currently, i end up pulling more than i can handle. What tips could you provide?

There are some good crowd control attacks. The whip is great for mobs. The longer 2-handed versions of weapons should be pretty good like the Hunter Axe. I would recommend trying out a good amount of weapons as I feel BB is more about trying and using more weapons vs Dark Souls where you kinda picked one and just leveled it. I really like a lot of the movesets on these weapons compared to Dark Souls. I'm actually leveling both STR and Skill because I like so many of the weapons (plus I hear it's awhile before another skill weapon is available). You can usually fight 1v1 for most of the first 2 areas, it isn't until Old Yharnam (I just beat that boss) that you kinda have to fight a lot more mobs. I like to retreat to a known area to try to funnel them as much as possible and it's an area I know so I won't be running into even more enemies during the fight. Also being offensive can save you as well because you can get back so much health if you attack right back after getting hit.

The main thing about BB is that From has removed a lot of cheap and easy ways to fight, no shields or magic really. I do much prefer the controls of BB as I hated trying to shield while fighting multiple enemies and the BB dodge is pretty nice.

Farm a couple blood echoes and buy lots of pebbles. They're only 10 blood echoes each, so not a huge loss out of your pocket.

Keep at a safe distance from other enemies, but close enough so the pebble can hit an individual. In most cases it should only pull that one enemy. Do this whenever you're unsure about pulling multiple mobs. It's a good way to alleviate difficulty for newer players and help them to adjust.

Otherwise, I'd say if you have or can buy the hunter axe, it can work for most of the game with its charged R2 attack. It's not the best move for crowd control by any means, but it does knock regular mooks way back and generally does quite a bit of damage. The rest of the hunter axe's moveset isn't so bad for hitting multiple enemies when it's 2-handed, but not the best, either.

Divide and conquer, and try to use the environment to bottle-neck enemies. Also, the secondary form of your trick weapon usually works well for crowd control if they should rush you, like the blade whip on the threaded cane. Use your gun on dogs should they be there as it knocks them off their feet real good.

The first mob area seems designed to teach you how to handle crowds; There's a long street with a couple of choke points, and a side path that you can use to survey the scene and draw a few straggling enemies toward you to thin out the herd.

Be aware of your surroundings and of where not to get stuck should the shit hit the fan, and of the enemies' attack range and you should be fine.

And use that dodge. Invicibility frames are your best friend.

If all else fails, just molotov the bastards. You can buy them at the Hunter's Dream merchant.

Throw rocks, for some odd reason only one mob responds that way.
Oterhwise attack - evade, attack - evade, attack - evade, if you turtle you die because you have no defence and your health can't take the abuse.

Use pebbles to lure them one by one. You could also use your pistol but you might attract more because of the sound. Also use the hunter axe trick mode charge attack . It knocks enemies down. Hell i used that weapon through the entire game.

I'm playing without a walkthrough so i haven't found most of the weapons most people are using.

 

[Sniper Team 4]

Threaded Cane = Crowd Control

Honestly, I don't know why I haven't come across more people using this weapon. I'm assuming you're stuck at that part where it seems like the entire town is gathered around that burning werewolf? First off, try to pick of the straggler groups before they link up. Then, run up the right side and kill the axe-torch-tophat guy up there. That will lure two enemies up there and you can kill them next. After that, you can actually run to the other side and up the stairs and through the gate and the enemies won't chase you. Turn around then, and walk forward just enough so that some of them notice you again and wipe them out. Take out the rifle guy on the wagon next, and the dog if it comes after you, and then you should be down to about three or four guys. Take out the other rifle guy by slowly walking up behind him, and bam. What was a mob is now just a few people.
But seriously, the threaded cane is boss at taking on multiple enemies. Just keep your distance.
