Right, so Im trying to write a novel for the first time in my life. Ive written a few short stories and poems and what not for local contests, but Ive never written anything over 50 pages. I was wondering if any of you fine people would like to help me with some plot ideas. So far, I have narrowed down some things: I know the initial setting will be either present day or WWI era U.S.; the protagonist will be a male between the ages of 12 and 17; there will be no love interest. Any good, (or just extremely hilarious), ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also feel free to post anything you are currently reading or if you have ever written a novel yourself.

Okay, main problem: Are you trying to write a humor novel? An action piece? fantasy/sci-fi? What will the main genre be?

Oh my bad. I was thinking to write some sort of fantasy fiction novel, since that's my favorite category.

A group of demon killing, gun slinging, nobodies. Just random people who have some special power that allows them to see some humans for what they are: Cultists, Satanists, or demonic things. But, just to put something, one guy is an agnostic, and kind of hates the idea of Satan and God, so he calls the demons "The Soul-less" meaning he thinks they're un-human, not supernatural. They kill the Satanists and Cultists because they want to harness the power of the guys' gift to... maybe summon Satan? I dunno. That's my basic idea so far.

Edit: They have to perform Satanic Rituals to get the power, as they have to rip out the teams' souls to get it.

Supernatural horror from beyond always works wonders. Or a hint of one. A cult that tries to bring about the Cthulthu equivevalent can be more horrifying than the actual monster, because of the human factor.

Spice that up with a personal vengeace or righteous anger causing something to cause the main plot or act as a little side story. For a little humor, make the main character slightly incompetent but lucky etc. Somehow force him to make unorthodox decisions in different situations and hilarity can easily ensue. Perhaps he is one of the few who can tell the difference between a cultist and a human because he can see souls. But he's otherwise blind. or something.

The cult naturally has some reason for not having been discovered before this. Perhaps it's a fresh cult and not that big of a threat unless allowed to grow, perhaps the summoning is near, perhaps their master is getting impatient, perhaps the monster is already present but wants his followers to begin phase 2/3/4/5 of World Domination Plan X.

Whatever you do make sure to involve a monkey in your book. I'm sorry, but monkeys make anything better.

Hmm. WW1-era and fantasy fiction? I like it. Could be sort of steampunkish, but with a bit more of a modern taste.

Would you want it to have something to do with the war, or no?

How about something with his quest to impress his potential girlfriend in an alternate history where women are in charge, and the governments of the world are totally different?
And there are pirates, and Girl Hitler fighting Girl Winston Churchill.

Ok why dont u make it so the protagonist is somehow connected to a secret prophecy foretelling of a man who will save the earth from total destruction. Even though the man is torn between fighting in the war and staying with his dieing mother. At the climax he realizes that his younger brother was the holder of the prophecy. and the brother gets older fights in ww2 in the second book or something maybe not but whatever

He should be tormented by the ghost of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the whole thing should be a satire about how technology has made communication easier but (ironically) genuine human connection more difficult... and there should be gratuitous sex.

But that's just me...
So your book would be just like Darkly Dreaming Dexter, without the cool murders and just leaving the boring parts?

Well, if you want to write a novel, it should be of your OWN ideas, instead of trying to find someone randomly online. sorry if it sounds harsh, but how do you know if you are a good writer or not if you don't even think up of your own plot lines?
