The War of the Worlds is a good read, the Discworld series is also one to watch out for. The comedy can be hit and mix at times but they're still good books to read.

While this does come in book form, its more like an extremely long poem than a traditional story.

Try George Orwell's stuff, I found that he had a style of writing that just made it impossible to put the book down. 1984 is really good, and "Down and out in London and Paris" gives you a great look at the state of turn of the century Europe before the Welfare state.

You might like Artemis Fowl if fantasy is your thing, always been a favorite of mine.

Also, World War Z, because it's the best book ever.

And the Horus Heresy series is fantastic, even if you're not seriously into warhammer 40k.

Hmm ... for something thought-provoking, I'd go with:
Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World"
George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four"
Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers"

Basically SF though. But all very political and bound to cause debates. Brave New World is actually my favourite novel, *EVER*.

And if you're interested in Orwell, his book "Homage to Catalonia" about his time fighting fascism in Spain (let's see "academics" of his calibre actually take up arms and risk their lives for what they believe in these days, eh?) is an interesting read, too. The evolution of his views of Communism vs Fascism therein are very interesting.

Simon Scarrow's Roman stories are fun. They're not historically accurate, and he's no Shakespeare himself, but they are bloody good, ripping yarns of adventure.

The Name of the Wind. Its the first book in the Kingkiller trilogy by Patrick Rothfuss. If you like Harry Potter but want something a little more adult then it should be right up your alley.

That's cause it was written as a poem.

OT. Magician by Raymond E Feist. It's the starting point in a huge saga. Around 20 odd books I believe, but there are a few sub-sagas in that. The most recent ones, starting with Talon Of The Silver Hawk, are amongst my favorite books of all.

If Medieval interests you at all, give Bernard Cornwell a go. A lot of his books are based on historical events, and then he places a fictional character in that event to tell the story. The Grail Quest trilogy and The Saxon Saga are both incredible.

Pick up Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. He's the best new fantasy writer alive today, and everything he touches turns to verbal gold. The man writes some of the best characters and stories in literature, and his magic systems are very unique and downright awesome; you will dream of being an Allomancer after reading book I. You will not regret picking up these books, I swear it. After you finish the Mistborn trilogy, feel free to dive into the rest of his library. They're all fantastic, especially Elantris but I'd suggest starting with Mistborn as it's his best known work and it's just... so wonderful.

EDIT: I don't know if the other posters here even read your post of what you like, some of that shit's really heavy and quite a switch from the Inheritance series. I stand by my recommendation though, it's a fairly light read that gets batshit crazy in the second and third books but stays grounded throughout.

It was very good.

The Rangers Apprentice Series, The Night Angel Trilogy, The Black Prism, Brotherband, The Tomorrow Series and The Chronicles of Siala are all very good books. What makes them better is that they're all in a series of books which means more to read!

Terry Pratchett. His Discworld novels are some of the best fantasy I have ever read. They're funny, clever and intense all at the same time.
Also, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I have read this book three times and it never gets old.
Finally, The Hunger Games Trilogy. Intense survival action with a political twist. Really good reads.

Recently, finally took a mates advice and read 'American Gods'. I am now a fan.

SciFi, not fantasy, but I often recommend John Birmingham's 'Axis of Time' trilogy (international fleet from 2021 gets sent back in time to World War 2) and 'Without Warning' (not quite a trilogy yet, America is destroyed by a cosmic wave and the rest of the world ends up fucking itself over as a result). Speculative fiction/alternate history. Good reads.

Robert Fisk: The Great War for Civilization - It's the history your teachers never told you and it's an easy read too.
Thomas Cathcart & Daniel Klein: Plato and a Platypus walk into a bar - Understanding philosophy through jokes, try and top that.

There was one more but i can only remember the title: Why do men fall asleep after sex?; And other questions you'll ask after your third martini. The title pretty much says it all.
