So I was wondering, why do only vault hunters respawn?

In Bioshock, the Jack can respawn in the vita chambers because Andrew Ryan's dna is in him. In Borderlands, Vault hunters can respawn, but it seems anyone else dies (bandits, engineers etc)

This really bugs me during story missions where characters die and don't respawn. I don't remember that many story related deaths in the first borderlands.

Bosses and enemies do respawn though. Rather quickly at that, if you spend too much time clearing out an area, you will fight almost indefinitely.

Quitting and reloading also resets all the spawns.

As far as normal bandits go, the greater number of them don't carry that much money. So even though they still pay for a respawn they can't afford the express respawn package the vault hunters obviously must have. Hyperion Engineers arn't treated that well either, so they probable get the cheap respawners so Jack can save some cash.

This is of course random reasoning I tell myself to after I questioned the very same thing, and I needed a quick lie to tell myself so I would not go crazy and start looking for given developer reasons.

The only people who don't respawn are people that Jack wants dead (Crimson Lance members like Helena Pierce),
Slagged Bloodwing, who isn't in the New-U system because she's a bird, Jack himself, who didn't use the New-U system, and Angel-likely because she was never put into the system and even if she was, she could have easily taken herself out because she wanted to die. The New-U system doesn't revive you, instead it digistructs a clone of you. Jack is too vain to let a clone finish his work, which is why he has body doubles- He's afraid of death. Everyone else revives endlessly. The Vault Hunters are allowed to live because in the first part, Jack needs them alive for his plan to work, then when he has reason to kill them, they have Angel protecting them, and when she dies, Jack wants them alive so that he can kill them over and over again until he's satisfied.
