I just saw the video that Gearbox just released to show why Krieg became a vault hunter. First, I really enjoyed it, it kind of felt like a "Meet the _____" Video from Team Fortress 2.
Second, although the video didnt delve into exactly how he became a psycho, I feel there is a completely different motivation to Krieg than what I expected. Originally I thought he was just looking for vengeance against Hyperion for making him a Psycho, but now I don't have that feeling. In the video he sees Maya and is instantly lovestruck but his sane mind has trouble telling the dominant psycho part what to do so he yells, "I'm the conductor of the POOP TRAIN" and Maya reacts just as any woman would act in that situation, starts shooting at him with a shock smg. Rats show up behind her and Krieg is able to control himself and kill the rats and save Maya who gives him a grateful smile afterwards. So now I feel that Krieg was just a regular psycho until he saw Maya and his love for her has made him into a vault hunter. Kind of like WALL-E but with murder and meat bicycles. Further making Krieg my all time favorite vault hunter as well as a top contendor for favorite character to play as of all time, literally was a game changer for me.

In case anyone wanted to see it.

Although this trailer is basically all I know about Kreig because I've not been keeping up with the news on him, you seem about right with him being a regular Psycho that manages to put aside his crazy for someone he likes.
I'd decided in my own little head canon that the DLC Vault Hunters weren't with the main four for the long haul, they just run into each other every now and again. So I assume Kreig wouldn't really become a Vault Hunter per se, he'd just show up when Maya's in danger or to help out with big battles. Or if someone says "meat" too loud.

It was a good trailer, anyway. Even if it will make me feel bad for killing psychos from now on. Like, what if none of them want to be hurting people?

Still not forking out £8 just to play as him though.

That's really interesting. He also has some great lines that he shouts out, will definitely consider getting him as Zer0 is pretty boring when it comes to one-liners.

Krieg is unique to Pandora because what little we do know is that he is an escaped test subject from a lab deep beneath Pandora. Tannis mentions that most if not all of the bandits you encounter are ex DAHL employees that were abandoned when DAHL left the planet because it couldn't deal with the Crimson Lance. As for Krieg's inner voice it seems to keep Krieg in check with promises of killing the "deserving" but also threatening him that he will kill them both if he touches an innocent. There have been theories of who Krieg was in his previous life such as

He is Tiny's father who was experimented on with Eridium. Both have a fondness for explosives, Krieg's inner voice keeps asking if a "she" got away and is still alive and he wants revenge on Hyperion for offenses not described. Hardly conclusive but the mystery keeps him interesting at least.
