Rockstar's talked up the radical change in setting for Max Payne 3, which moves shop from New York City to Brazil's Sao Paulo.

The game's art director told Edge in its latest issue that he finds the setting "fascinating" and promised fans Brazil will allow every stage to be different from the last.

"We saw a lot of diverse environments that we could stick [Max Payne] in," Rob Nelson told Edge. "It's a huge city and there's a major disparity between rich and poor. Learning about that, finding out how massive the place is, has been fascinating."

The game's development team - which now stretches across Vancouver, Toronto, London and New England - claims it's put the same amount of research into Sao Paulo as original 'Payne developer Remedy did with New York.

Several members of the development team travelled to Brazil for weeks of photography and filming, immersing themselves in local society, Rockstar told Edge.

"The research is constant, it's anything that we can get our hands on, pretty much all the way through development," said Nelson. "Everyone gets really interested - we're always swapping things we've learned, trying to make sure we're accurately recreating the place. We take it really seriously.

"We can't really re-use a lot of assets," sais Nelson. "Every stage is going to be different from the last one. Brazil is a fascinating place to set a game - there are plenty of unique aspects to the setting that we'll reveal over time. We've got a lot to work with."

My opinion: i agree, São Paulo is a great city. I just hope that noir feeling doesn't go away.

For a moment there I thought we'd be getting a GTA game set in a Gilliam film. I'm dissapointed.

I also first thought of the film upon reading the thread title.

GTA in Rio would be pretty sweet... kidnapping people, sleeping with ladyboys, and all the other negative stereotypes. I have no interest in Max Payne though

I still haven't played a Max Payne game. I've looked at gameplay and I don't think I'd like them.

Anyway, I'm really hoping they take GTA out of the states and into Europe. I doubt it will happen, but I can always hope.

and you think there are no "RIGHTWING EXTREMIST RADIOSTATIONS" in Brazil? Radiostations are much worse here (i live in Brazil), my god, they indeed are!

I'm actually interested. Tentatively, but everything about the game is worrying me at this point. The setting really does offer quite a bit in the way of diversity; a far cry from the dingy city setting of the last two games. However, I just don't know what to think about the story. I mean, the ending of Max Payne 2 was pretty damn definitive...where else could it really go?

And that's the problem, imagine a GTA where all you can get in the radio stations is Carioca funk, Sertanejo music or bands like Restart (yeah, I live in Brazil too)...

But seriously, if they made a GTA Rio, I would love to see them implement a mechanic where you could be hit by a stray bullet at any moment, without warning, and die instantly. You know, like in real life.

OT: I'll probably play the new Max Payne if I get a chance, if only for the curiosity of seeing an AAA title ambiented in my country for once (the last one in my memory was Driver 2). But I'll sure miss the noir feeling that looks completely absent in everything I have seen about the game so far. Pity, São Paulo has a great noir potential, it's kinda like the Brazilian NY. I hope to be proven wrong.

Restart? Oh god, they would never do that!

Now come on! Rio isn't that bad, the risk of you getting hit by a stray bullet is very low, much higher than if you are in a developed city in a developed country, but still low.

And don't forget that stereotypes spoil the fun. Have you ever played modern warfare 2? Only one word: Favelas!

A noir. Set in Brazil. Crazy... Then again, Casablanca was set in Morocco.

Hmm, any word on if they're going with fat Max? Was a little perturbed when I first saw those images but, hey it could work:

Max Payne said:
I stared down as the grease trickled and pooled onto the broken shards below. Brown...smelling like angels. I couldn't lift my arm, I couldn't bring the juicy goodness to my lips...the burger was too heavy. It was at this point I wondered, if my life of pill popping and slugging down cheap ass fast-food was worth it. I roll onto my side, head hitting the floor, the bits of broken coffee table biting me. My teeth sink into the bread and tender flesh. So worth it.

it's just nice to see a game that could be set in a major american city NOT being set in a major american city, ficticious or otherwise
or at least being considered not to be

it'd be a pretty unique setting in terms of current gen games, i can't even think of any ever set in any south american country besides mexico
anyway if they do make this decision i welcome it

modern warfare 2, driver 2 and tom clancy's H.A.W.X had some levels where you could play in brazilian territory. Nothing really impressive though, and that's one of the reasons why i'm excited about max payne 3: i want to see if they do it right.

It's actually not the setting that worries me. It's the pictures I've seen of Max coupled WITH the setting that worries me. Brazil could totally work, sure, because it's the Noir element that makes Max Payne...well...Max Payne. I'm just worried that we're going to lose that.

But maybe we won't. I'm holding out for the best, but quietly preparing for the worst.

GTA in Columbia set it at the same time Pablo Escobar was at the top of his game fighting the Columbian Block and Los Pepes that would be a crazy game.
That would be quality

When is GTA: Norway showing up then? Oo

Aaaaah yeah... Trees, oil, MP5's and Oslo's finest youth. Now that's what we want.

Imagine it. Pushing drugs on the corner. Shop lifting. Getting several (!!) hours of community service for beating on some poor guy. Oh yea, it's a straight up thug town, Oslo is!
