*Minor Spoilers for Breaking Bad Ahead*

I love Breaking Bad, I was lukewarm at first, but once I got far enough in, it grew on me and I was hooked, and now I think it is one of the best shows of all time. At this point I know most Breaking Bad fans want Walt to get his just desserts because of the horrible things he has done, and because of his overall transformation from the nice guy to the villain. But am I the only one who still likes him? Who is rooting for him?

He is such a great character to me because of his journey to the "dark-side" of sorts. He is an anti-hero in the "tragic hero" sort of way because you see his rise and fall, and as the show progresses, you pretty much see his motivation behind his actions and his transformation so it becomes almost relatable, but still very unfortunate. If there was none of that backstory or development, and we just saw him first off as Heisenberg (in the Tuco sort of light) I would hate him, but something about how I've been with him from the beginning is so crucial to me pulling for him. It's almost as if I feel sorry for him in a way, that his transformation was so sad and got so ugly.

I don't know many other types of media that pull off this as particularly well, but in relation to this, I find that my favorite stories are ones that include anti-heroes. But even with a lot of my favorite anti-heroes (I LOVE anti-heroes), the character isn't always portrayed as an especially "great, kind-hearted" person from the beginning despite the inevitable character development. For example, Kratos from God of War was still a hard-ass, angry, violent barbarian sort of dude. Light Yagami from Death Note was a super intelligent, "nice kid," but he had this (though not unrealistic) introverted, high-horse sort of attitude ("all bad people need to be eliminated") that made him eat up the power the book gave him like biscuits and gravy.

*Minor Shadow of the Colossus Spoilers* Some of my other favorite stories/characters with anti-heroes that I feel like are done in a similar way of BB are The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption and Shadow of the Colossus. For SotC, all Wander wants to do is save his one true love, and he is lead to view these colossi as "monsters" that he has to slay in order to save her soul, but he ends up being the bad guy without you realizing it until it is probably too late and you are too far into it to just gracefully bow out, which I see as similar to Walt a little bit. But then there's the obsession and the power and the hubris and everything along with it.

Sorry, I rambled A LOT, but does anyone else still want to see Walt pull through?

Part of me wants him to because he's such a well written character and I dislike seeing bad stuff happen to him. On the other hand, he's a massive **** who made Jesse's life hell, so that changes things up a bit.

While i got a kinda guilty "F**k YEAH!" out of the Season 4 finale despite Walt being such a dick, he lost all sympathy from me in Season 5.1 (as intended).

But still, when he goes out, i want to have him go out in style. He still deserves that at least.

I'm still rooting for him, but I feel bad for his wife getting shoved into his mess like that.
Although I enjoy his brother-in-law better, he is a bit of a jerk but he's very likable and very smart as well. Can't wait for their face-off.

I've always rooted for Walt until the end seriously how Skylar acts just pisses me off. He is doing what he needs to who's to say he's right or wrong lol?

He may have been an anti-hero at one point, but he definitely isn't anymore. As of season five he's firmly a villain protagonist, as he's the most irredeemable character left in the show.

I sincerely hope Jesse ends up killing him. It's the only ending that I'll find satisfying. Skylar killing him would be ok but it really should be Jesse.

i still think he's awesome. i thought a lot of the characters were in the morally grey area though, walt most of all. regardless, i'm still rooting for him. if he were to die, i would be pissed if it was anybody except jesse who does it.

part of the reason i don't see him as a villian though might be due to the fact that ANYTHING he does to piss off or hurt skylar i'm happy with, because fuck skylar

I only root for grandpa hitman, the rest can burn. No, I haven't seen season 4.
I'm still banking that this is all a fantasy of Walt's dying brain - he was never cured.

Jeez, a lot of hate for Skyler here. She could of handled some of the shit that happened to her a little better, sure, but Walt's the one at fault here. He ruined their lives. I can't blame her.

I'm rooting for him, but that's nothing unusual for me, I almost always end up rooting for the villain. The end of season 4 and season 5 have been by far my favorite episodes, probably because Walt finally firmly switched from somewhat morally grey to a full on evil mastermind in my mind.

Sadly, in media these stories can pretty much only end one way, and the villain never ends up on top. Though I'd prefer an ending where Walt actually "wins" (insofar as completely alienating his family and losing everything he originally held dear can be counted as a win), I'd settle for Jesse delivering some much-deserved comeuppance.

To be honest it's kind of hard to root for him after that "I'm in the Empire business" line. Also he shot Mike. YOU SHOT MIKE YOU FUCK!

Well, if you consider Gus' line "I will kill your wife, I will kill your son, I will kill your infant daughter" to be an idle threat, then yeah she's totally overreacting.

I think the tipping point for me was Walt's line about that "Empire Business." Up to that point, he'd always put his family first, just trying to lock down that $700k that would set them up for life. But then it became about trying to make himself feel better about missing out on Grey Matter. I guess I was naive to believe that he was telling the truth when he said he was going to stop cooking after he made up for the money Skylar gave to Ted Beneke.

I pretty much agree with this post entirely. Who knew the dad from Malcolm in the Middle could actually ACT?!

I don't know. It's hard to lose all sympathy for him when we've followed him through bad and good for 4 seasons. He's done some terrible things in season 5 so far, but I still want his story to have a happy ending.

In the beginning, he was only thinking about his family. But somewhere in season 4, I feel that his personality changed, he became more ruthless and used his success in the Meth business to make up for Grey Matter. He's a very deep character for a TV show, and I think the writers deserve a lot of praise. The amount of development that guy has gone through... And of course, Bryan Cranston absolutely killed it as Mr. White. I think his performance really opened up the eyes of many film makers. Probably gonna see him in many big movies in the future.

I'm struggling to find an act he has performed that really draws him as an evil individual. Every time he's killed someone it's been about self-preservation or protecting those he cares about rather than malice.

I guess there was the addict girl who died in front of him but she was pretty much doomed already. He had his own shit to deal with and he needed Jessie at the time or he was going to suffer real bad.

He's probably my favorite villain protagonist I've ever encountered.

He never killed someone out of malice? One word.
Mike.

....Seriously fuck Walter.
