I apologize if this had been done before, I did take a look at the forums to see but I might not have looked back far enough.

The upcoming title Brink is based largely upon customization. You can be just about any race, with any style of clothing, hair, the works. But you cannot be female.

Now I?m sure we?ll see a lot of retaliation against what I?m about to say, such as adding in females would have taken time the devs didn?t have. Such as more males game then females. As true as they may be however they do not make the fact that a game, largely based on customization, is excluding half of the human race.

It?s true, we have seen this before in many games. But even shooters such as Halo and Gears of War have stepped up to include female avatars or multiplayer options. Those games don?t have customization passed some colour and load outs.

I am personally very, very disappointed that you cannot play a female in a game based on customizing your character to represent what you want.

Discuss your thoughts on the topic.

This thread has been done before and I'll agree with what was said before.

I'd prefer to see one full assed customization as compared to two half assed ones.

Any game that offers even the most basic of character customization options, but does not include the option to select your gender, is immediately ignored by me. That's why I have not and will not play the Gothic series.

Well, since what I wanted to say has been said, I'll mention that I'm also looking forward to the game quite a bit.

I agree. Gender is a pretty big thing to ignore when it comes to character customization.

i think it really depends on the game. I do love games that allow full customisation, but if a central aspect to the story is a character of one gender then I dont think the game would work allowing a different gendered character.

personally i think its simply easier to only include male characters, for example:

larger builds are slower and resist more damage (like the heavy), whereas smaller builds are faster but yet resist less damage (like the scout).

adding in females on top of this formula makes this more complicated.

imagine a female heavy :S that doesnt really fit.

Honestly, I don't care if I have to play a transgendered Labrador Retriever with a tophat and Doc Martens, I care if it's a good game, and it would be awesome if people focused on that more than the incidentals.

i guess its like, take a james bond game, that allowed customisation of your character (like your one of a series of agents styled on james bond) the game wouldnt work so well story wise to supplant jane bond. on the other hand, games like mass effect which is a more open ended rpg, allows you to define how you react to people and you can act in ways that you feel appropriate to your character

Does Halo have female charecters in ITS multiplayer? What about Section 8? I don't know why Brink is the upset. Of course, it is a little more jaring since there isn't power armor for everyone. Despite Spartans in Multiplayer looking male, it doesn't take much to imigine one as a girl.
Brink is the upset because, aside from forcing your character to be male, it has a very robust character customization aspect. The fact that it put so much focus into character customization, yet forced your character to be a guy, makes the issue (which is still present in other shooters mind you) more obvious.

Imagine if Bioware came out with a new RPG with their standard level of customization, but decided that your character had to be a girl, how do you think people would react? It's the same issue here.

This, yeah so I'm getting Brink 6 more days, and I am completely ok with it not having female characters as PayneTrayne already said, so yeah..

it really bugged me as the developers reason was pretty annoying.

Perhaps DLC will be released to allow a female avatar later, but it still irks me that I can't be a girl in the game. If you boast character customization, then fricking well let us customize.

The last one did have females, didn't it? Or was that just the campaign?

Edit: Seriously people, it's been two days, you think someone else hasn't already responded to this? Quit quoting this post.

You know they (the developers) said due to time constraints, they had to choose from male only with lots of customization or both sexes with limited customization. Besides it doesn't matter since millions of people play CoD and other shooters where your character is only male.

Well I could argue the same for non-male games. Mirrors Edge, Portal, Tomb Raider, Metroid Prime, Beyond Good & Evil, Diablo 1&2 (I wanted to have a male Sorceror or a female Necromancer, Buuuut NOOOOOOO says Blizzard), Eternal Darkness, Heavenly Sword, ect.

But in this case...yes...Brink is just being lazy

Splash Damage has gone very in depth on this topic if you would take the time to research before posting your uneducated opinion.

The way they see it:

Also, throughout the entire development process, they are going to produce X amount of customization features for their male models. If they included female models it would mean that each sex would only have .5X different features. Its a choice between one in-depth system or a system that may potentially be slightly in-depth or two lackluster systems. Considering that the target demographic is substantially male its no surprise what they decided on.

I'm not sure if they mentioned this but it would also double the amount of animation work needed, which is another factor.

It's a shame they didn't go that extra mile, but as a guy, I don't mind. There might be decent story reasons (survival of the species?) that could be used to explain why women aren't fighting, but I'm sure it would just seem like an excuse. I think we'll just have to hope that the game's good enough and succeeds with its target demographic (mostly males), and then hope for female characters in Brink 2. Not much else to do at this point.
