Bear with me here, this is a little ridiculous.

I bought it over a year ago second hand but I know for a fact it was never used. It belonged to my exs dad, he sold it to me at a pretty good price.

I had it for 2 weeks, got about 6 hours of gameplay out of it in that time and then it stopped working. It refuses to play any disc of any kind. It just doesn't acknowledge I've even put something inside it.

It's an old model, backwards compatible. I live in BallyassBackwards, Ireland. There isn't much around here in the way of technical savvy. Advice on how to deal with this?

Is this a common problem, can it be fixed, is it worth fixing?

I own Disgaea 3 and I've never played it. God dammit.

Good news, [del]everyone[/del], you can fix it and it's not that hard if you're just careful and know a little about hardware. I've seen people on here, who had a broken PS3 as well, in one way or another and I've at least tried to help them.

From you description, it sounds like the laser in the Blu-Ray drive might be dirty and the solution to your problem is most likely in this post that I wrote about a month or so ago.

I really hope it helps and I would definitely say it's worth repairing, since it's one of the fat ones. I love mine, especially because of the backwards compatibility. I successfully repaired mine last year, when it YLOD'ed on me, so it's definitely doable to repair it. Also, what's the worst that can happen? The warranty is (presumably) not covering anymore, so since it's not working, you can't really break it more.
