recently I was on youtube, and I posted that I thought that bioshock infinite was garbage (not on an infinite video on the original bioshock video) now I fully admit that was a bit of a harsh criticism, even if it is my opinion.

I have since stated that it's only my opinion and people should make their own decisions, however....

Since posting that, I have been blasted, attacked, scorned, questioned and otherwise bullied a fair bit for my comment, how DARE I dislike the "amazing" Bioshock infinite! I have praised a few things about the game but truly I dislike it so...

I was wondering, how many others have run across this and how did you deal with it?

Sure, that kind of thing's happened to me. Luckily I don't really let youtube comments affect me because that would be like taking stuff scrawled on a bathroom wall to heart, so I didn't really have to 'deal' with anything.

What did you expect?

If you go somewhere that is frequented by fans of X and cordially inform them that X is "garbage", chances are they're going to react unfavourably, especially in an unregulated environment like Youtube. Telling them that it is just your opinion never works.

Now, I'm off to No Mutants Allowed to tell them that Fallout 1+2 are execrable pieces of shit. Wish me luck!

Well you're right. Bioshock Infinite was garbage (No... It wasn't terrible actually but it certainly wasn't 10/10 material). But yeah don't go to youtube comments expecting sunshine and daisies.

Did you explain why you thought it was garbage? If not, then I'm afraid you are in the wrong, you need to explain why or it will look like you are just trying to rile people up.

If you did explain, some people can't stand seeing games they love be hated, but like you said, calling it "garbage" was a little too harsh, I have yet to play the game and I have a feeling it is more than garbage.
I did as best I could, but youtube's comment limit makes it hard, i was only able to get a few points out (the nonsensical ending, the fact the guns didn't evolve (minor but it still bothered me) the fact that the vigors are never, ever explained in any facet, and about that point I ran out of characters.

And this right here is one of the things that's wrong with how people discuss video games.

In the same breath you say that Bioshock Infinite is "garbage" and in the other you say it wasn't terrible. That's exactly what calling something "garbage" means, it means that it's terrible. If something isn't terrible there are other words that are much more appropriate, like mediocre, or underdeveloped.

You see, this is why a lot of people will either attack you, or just won't take your "opinion" seriously if you make a claim like "Bioshock Infinite is garbage" because it clearly isn't garbage, regardless of whether or not you liked it. Just the very fact that everything in the game works as intended, the game has an interesting visual style, and the voice acting is good puts it above things that are ACTUALLY garbage.

Saying that Bioshock Infinite is garbage really is just hyperbole meant to rile people up, and you can't claim that it isn't. You can say that you didn't like it all you want, you can explain why you didn't like it or why you think it doesn't work, but you can't objectively call it garbage by any stretch of the imagination.

I once put down a comment along the lines of "I really like this band, much prefer to it (insert band I don't like here that has a rabid fanbase)" and got blasted for it. Pretty much, it's people's inability to tolerate opinions that don't fall in line with their own. Also, they do enjoy flagging your comments as "spam", which amuses me, since I'm sure the majority of them talk about how great freedom of speech is.

Welcome to the internet

If you haven't gotten to the state of mind where you don't take every damn 12yearolds' opinions about you and your ideas and arguments serioulsly you might as well stop writing your opinions publicly.
It's a harsh harsh virtual world out there, son

You don't deal with it. You ignore it. Brrrrrrrush it off your shoulder. just like that.

Can't say I've ever been bullied into liking a game. I've got no doubt that people have disagreed with my opinions on some games but I can't say that I've been attacked/harrased/questioned because I have to like X because Y!

And if I have, then fuck you, I've got my own opinions and I ain't changing them because you said I have to!

Ah, is it this video, perchance?
(Gotta love ol' Brentalfloss)

I see you're one of the top rated comments, so not everyone is acting hostile towards you. In any case, I wouldn't worry about it. Admittedly you might have worded your initial statement better than "it's garbage." It comes across as somewhat flamebait-y. A little tact can get you a long way.

But hey, different strokes for different folks and all that. If you didn't like it, then you didn't like it. Besides, Youtube comments have a well-deserved reputation for being gutter-trash tier for debate on the internet. It's not worth the time or effort.

Well if you publicly announce your opinions they will be publicly dissected, the more extreme you get will also reflect the severity of feedback.
If you don't want people to respond then don't make public statements, or if you want them to be more civil you need to deliver it in a more serene fashion.

Not really, because I try to avoid such unhelpful blanket statements, particularly about something most people enjoy. The backlash you got is more likely for the fact you called the game "garbage" than it is for having a different opinion, as while there are people out there who will attack people for disagreeing, they aren't as common as people like to make out.

If you'd calmly explained why you didn't like the game, and given reasons as well as acknowledging those parts of it you did like, instead of labelling it as an awful game, I'd bet cash monies that the reaction would have been much calmer. It's not so much "how dare you not like this?!" as it is "how dare you call it garbage?!" because people are much more likely to take offense to the latter, as it implies not that the game wasn't to your taste but that they have poor taste for enjoying it.

You stating your opinion would be "I really like this band".

You stirring up controversy would be "I really like this band, they're waaaaay better than whatever you like".

There is a difference. One simply states an opinion, the other states that opinion while disparaging someone else's, so you got blasted for it.

If you call something garbage when it is a matter of it not fitting your personal tastes as opposed to being objectively bad; then you should expect people to take it personally. Because you are saying that they like garbage, which people will take as an insult.

If you do not like something there are countless ways to express it without directly or indirectly insulting the people who do.

That said, sometimes you can post the most mild comment and people will still try and verbally rip you apart for it. But that still doesn't mean it's a good idea to express opinions in a way that will rile people up, even if they should also be mature enough to handle it.
