Bungie Files New Marathon Trademark

Has Bungie tipped its hand regarding its plans after finishing Halo: Reach [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Reach-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA20M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278968624&sr=1-1]?

Bungie representatives have repeatedly gone on the record as saying that this year's Halo: Reach would be the last in the series - at least, the last for a very long time [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98563-Bungie-Might-Make-Another-Halo-Someday] - leading many to wonder what the studio would possibly use to occupy its time once it was finished with such a monumental (and lucrative) franchise.

Now, it looks like we may have a hint at a possible answer, and Bungie may be revisiting its roots. The developer has filed a trademark [http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=77953184] for "Marathon" - Marathon being, of course, the name of the studio's beloved FPS trilogy for the Mac. Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity were sci-fi FPS games that put Bungie on the map as a prominent Apple OS developer, and are seen as spiritual predecessors for the wildly popular Halo.

While the existence of a trademark doesn't necessarily indicate anything other than a studio desiring to cover its bases - Bungie could have several potential new projects in mind once Reach is through - a hint is a hint, and this is a very interesting hint. It's been over a decade and a half since the first Marathon was released in 1994 - will fans finally be getting a true sequel after all these years?

If it's indeed true that they are making another Marathon game, while a lot of people will probably be exited, I'd still rather see something new from them. They stop milking a franchise so they can milk another one?

Bring on the originality, Bungie! Can't you make a cool puzzle-game set during the stone-age where you play as a 19th century adventurer who accidentally traveled back in time because his aunt played around with an ancient artifact he had stolen from Africa that happened to have time-traveling powers?

So Bungie is sick of making their Sci-Fi FPS shooter Halo and now are instead working on their Sci-Fi FPS shoort Marathon? (Looks up Irony...) Hmmmm...

Don't get me wrong, I really loved playing the Marathon games in the mid-90's while in school. I think Marathon was the first Multi-Player FPS game I played. Either that or Quake.

Nice to hear that they might remake Marathon.

While I never played a Marathon game I hear they were quite successful. Hers hoping they do a remake.

Ooh, I remember the Marathon Games.
Was hoping Bungie would one day get out a proper sequel to that franchise instead of just pulling out Halo after Halo.

Don't forget that since Microsoft doesn't own Bungie anymore they could make Marathon for PS3 and the Xbox 360 if they wanted to, they're not stuck on the 360 anymore.

Sereously I thought it was a great day when the original games were released for free download. A reboot of the series will make my decade.

I'm glad to hear Bungie is going to move past sticking mostly to Halo for video gaming, but as so many have pointed out before, it does seem a little ironic to stop doing one thing in a motif you've been cultivating for over a decade and a half to work towards something else in the same genre.

I'm not familiar at all with Marathon. I only had access to a Mac in college for web page design back in '97, and there weren't any games on those systems that I saw. I wouldn't mind seeing Bungie do something akin to a game more around driving physics without having to be a racing or nascar game... perhaps something more like the road warrior game we've been waiting on for a long time? More like Fallout, but mixed with Borderlands... jeez, talk about lacking original ideas!

I'm seriously stoked if this is true. The Marathon universe was very well-written and rich. Now if I can only convince them to revisit the Myth universe as well!!!

WOOOOOOAAAAAH YES!

ok a trademark copyright is always a dualistic thing. But since Bungie are the good ones, I guess this will lead to something beautiful

so if don´t know of Marathon head over to
http://source.bungie.org/index.php/Get_Marathon
and get all the original stuff for free, works also on XP/Vista and I guess W7 too.

For me, though obviously aged, the Marathon Universe has aged beautifully well.
and carnage gameplay is still totally fun. If you give it a chance.
