Hello Escapist!

A while ago my old laptop finally broke down and ever since I've been forced to use the "home" computer.

That kinda sucks so I've been saving up my cash for a couple of months to buy a brand spankin new laptop.

The thing is I've never bought a laptop before so I don't really know much about what is good and what isn't. So I thought that I'd ask the escapist for help on buying a laptop.

My spending limit is 2000 dollars. (give or take 200$)

Thanks in advance!

Throw out the laptop idea and build a sweet gaming rig.

Bah ha, but I kid. Seriously it depends on what you're planning to use it for. 2 grand will get you something pretty sweet. I'm guessing that since you're on the escapist you'd be looking more down the gaming aisle rather than the graphic design macbooky stuff. More info on what you want to do with it makes us more helpful :)

I bought an Asus G73SW model laptop and I love it.

Intel Core i7 - 2630QM
8GBs ram
1GB nVidia Geforce GTX460M
640GB Hard Drive (7200rpm)
17.3" display
Standard with an 8-cell Li-ion Battery
Backlit keyboard
Sleek design.
3 USB 2.0 ports and 1 USB 3.0

I would suggest something like that. The G73JH model is the top end one though it has an Radeon 5870 instead of a GTX 460.

I had one at Staples (where I work) that was $1349.99CAD. It had a 1TB Hard drive, a 1.5GB GTX 460M and I believe the ram was clocked a bit higher (still 8GBs though).

Here is a link to the G73JH model on the website, so you can see the look of it and some specs.

Despite being a ardent Mac user, if you are looking to do any sort of gaming, a Macbook Pro,while being nice enough, will most of the time not have the graphic capability of a equally priced pc counterpart.

But that aside, are you going to be using it got gaming or more general use?

I just want to know which laptops fit my price range.

As to gaming and general use, I'd like it if the laptop would be capable of running any of the new pc games with a decent speed.

However I think the specs required for that are a bit out of my range.

Not really, $2000 on a laptop can get you a very nice ASUS so here is what you do.

Go to Newegg

Search for laptops

Choose ASUS as the manufacturer

Then find one in your price range you like, and run it by us.

You should get one that will run most games these days.

You should be more specific. Will you be taking it around a lot? How important is battery life and screen size to you? $2000 USD could actually get you a very good laptop.
