Heres a question, when a Star dies doesn't it make a black hole? Just saying... I hear those things are pretty bad for our collective health.
Not always. A star needs to be of a particular size and needs to collapse at a particular speed to form a black hole. More likely, whatever they create will go nova, which would be dangerous if it wasn't so small. Failing that, it could just burn out. Stars do that on occasion- that's what dwarf stars are, basically.

And if it did create a black hole, it'd be so small that it probably wouldn't last very long.
Ahhh thank you for informing more. I do hope it makes a tiny tiny tiny super nova, like the see a tiny explosion. It would be cute, and awesome.

James Bond will save us. He's involved in anything regarding the "Worlds largest laser beam"

Wait, haven't physicists been doing that for years? That is, creating miniature suns to test fusion power. Only difference is they've been using tokamak reactors up until now that didn't incorporate giant lasers (show-offs). The first one was in 1963 IIRC and there have been many since. They're building a new one in Cadarache at the moment I think (ITER).

You know if it does kill us all, at least in the afterlife we could answer "How did you die" with "We made a freaking new sun! Top that."

This is absolutely genius. I cannot believe I have not seen this in any other plot based around the apocalypse. Seriously, death by man-made sunlight? Count me in! -F

Science doing the coolest things once again.
...And ofcourse all the not-scientists, the uninformed and fearmongers start whining at the same time.
And even if it does go wrong, it's only California =P

The ITER project works different. Instead of creating a miniature star, they emulate the conditions in a star by capturing hydrogen and deuterium plasma in a torical magnetic field, causing fusion.
ITER is actually not the first tokamak fusion reactor, but a new prototype to try to increase power output, operational time and to work out some kinks in the cooling an shieling materials.

Well, I have lost faith in humanity as a whole so if we get obliterated because of the creation of a star in our own planet then YAY! going out with a Bang!.
(I still prefer the idea of us creating a Black Hole in the LHC, its cooler to go with a Zwooop!)

In all seriousness, in order to create a star dangerous enough to get out of control and be considered a threat to us, you will need to fuse hydrogen nuclei over a volume similar to that of one of the great lakes. Also, keeping Nuclear fusion running is veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery very difficult and there are many factors not present in space that will interfere with the fusion, the amount of hydrogen used for the fusion is not enough to self sustain itself, thus it will grow dim and dissipate in a matter of milliseconds. So, even if they DID wanted to make a Doomsday it wont pose a considerable of threat.

Dont worry about it! :)

Why should I form an opinion on whether it destroys the world? I'm not a physicist, and clearly the people engineering it have far more experience than me, so unless some other qualified scientist said otherwise, I'll just have to take their word that it's safe.

It's either that or form ignorant opinions and scream that the world will end.

You know, I read the entire article looking for some mention of possible earth shattering consequences... because I forgot some people are still harping this arbitrary year as the end of all life on earth.

Please, for the love of god, get over it.
You guys realize that the thread title is a joke, right? I was just amused by the coincidence in timing meaning that this would happen around 2012. In all honesty, the experiment sounds interesting, and I hope they succeed.

Two points here:

1. I heard about this lab already. Isn't it actually an array of lasers that all focus on the same spot?

2. They chose that date for the publicity.
