I recently recieved a gift card for my birthday, and have decided to expand my collection of anime dvds to include Gundam. Trouble is, although I've heard wonderful things about the series I've never watched, & don't really know much about them. So I would like to tap into the anime knowledge of my fellow escapists: Where should I start? What series is a good launching point into the Gundamverse? Thanks in advance for your help.

I suggest Gundam 00. After the 80s series (plural) you don't need to watched in order, because all series are within their own universe. Gundam 00 is the newest, prettiest, and has decent action and story.
Then after that, try Gundam Wing, or maybe the original series.
EDIT: Also it splits the more usual 50 eps into two seasons of different story, so it doesn't drag as much.

Well Gundam is an odd series, it's quality fluctuates dramatically between each series. Where one could be one of the best anime show you've ever seen another could just be total crap...
but if you start anywhere start with the 70's original...

I remember SD Gundam my brother used to watch it all the time... it was terrible... it was a kids show anyway...FargoDog said:

Start at the Beginning.
I personally loved G Gundam and iv heard great things about 08TH MS Team.
But i would suggest staying away from Seed, Seed Destiny, and FARRRRRRRRRRRRR AWAY from 00.
Seed starts out ok but falls apart quickly, although(as John Funk likes to point out
) the music is great.
Destiny is just bad.
And 00.....i could sit through 5 episodes before my eyes and ears started bleeding.
Its horrible, its nothing but Girly men doing emotional things emotionally.
It looses the Mix of Drama and Action that made the earlier series so great and just gives every character Asshole Syndrome, Emotional Issues, or Soulless Military Doll Disease.

Go with Gundam Wing, G Gundam, Zeta Gundam and if you're in the mood watch SD GUNDAM FORCE and the original.

Man, I remember the days I watched these shows almost daily.
08th M.S. Team is the best Gundam. Period. The origninal unvuerse is by far still the best. 0079, Zeta, (skip ZZ Gundam), Char's Counter Attack, and the OVAs are all great, and even hold up for their age.
As long as you avoid Weeaboo God Gundam and SEED, you should be fine though.
