I've been feeling an urge to watch a sci-fi television show as of late. But I really don't want to have anything beating me about the head with how the propulsions of its ships work or anything like that. I'm mostly interested in sci-fi with a character focus rather than a technology focus, a bit like Doctor Who. I'd also like it to be a little light hearted, it doesn't have to be a comedy, but something that isn't all grim and serious all the time. It also doesn't have to be 'spaceship' sci-fi, can easily be one that is set in modern day with sci-fi elements.

A couple I'm looking into are X-Files, Warehouse 13, Eureka... Ones like that if you want a bit of an idea of what I'm after.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations that come in. I appreciate it. :)

Assuming that you have not seen it yet, I think the obvious answer to this question (like most questions in life) is Firefly

Firefly is great, and there's not so much blinding tech in it. Actually, I think the only Sci-fi thing about it is the spaceships.

EDIT: I've heard good things about Kyle XY. Haven't watched it yet (making my way through Castle right now. Nathan Fillion is an extremely sexy man) but you should give it a try.

Oh yeah, that one slipped my mind. A friend of mine keeps insisting I watch it. I've seen the first episode, very good. But the captain was bit of jerk...

And as for Kyle XY that is a good suggestion, my grandmother used to watch it. She said it was pretty good. Thanks for reminding me of it.

No sci-fi fan can be complete without at least giving Stargate SG-1 a look. It has some episodes that are a little tech heavy, but for the most part it's pretty light on tech garbage, and it's definitely character focused, and has some of the funniest moments in tv.

As for firefly, Mal will grow on you, trust me. He is an asshole, but his honor and compassion show here and there throughout the series, as to hints as to his origin story and why he got so screwed up. Actually, does anyone know if there are any "expanded universe" type books for firefly? A mal origin story would be fricking awesome.

Firefly and SG-1 seconded.

Also Warehouse 13 is pretty interesting if you just turn your brain off an except all the magic-esque stuff.

Some of Star Trek TNG might interest you. A lot of it can get really technobabbly but there are a good few character based episodes (try The Inner Light, season 5 or 6, see if that hooks you).

I'll second Firefly and SG-1. I watched SG-1 growing up (hell I remember when the first movie came out) and absolutely loved it. Plus it has MacGyver, who doesn't love MacGyver?

Another one I loved and felt wasn't too tech heavy was Babylon 5. It commonly gets over looked as it was on at the same time as Star Trek DS9, but it is a great series. Other good series are Andromeda with Kevin Sorbo, Quantum Leap and Sliders.

Yeah, SG1 is fairly light on the sci fi. SGA and SGU are about the same, though Universe is darker and edgier. A lot of people hate how it's "not the Stargate they know and love". It's fairly heavy on the military angle, of course, especially in U.

Firefly is the obvious one; it's a western that just happens to be set in space and involves spaceships and some terra-forming. Otherwise it's completely western - not a single laser in sight, except for *one* in the movie and a broken antique around episode 14 or so.

Ah, Sliders. I remember that.

Ah yeah, Stargate. I watched the movie and the first two episodes of SG-1. I had started watching it and was enjoying it, just kinda got lost when college started up.

Oh yeah, I know about that one. That was my Mom's suggestion when I asked the same question. She's a big fan of Picard. XD

Thanks again everyone for all of the recommendations, Firefly and SG-1 are definitely both at the top of the list.
