I want to buy minecraft, and I've played the online version and it ran ok.
I have an optiplex gx620 if that helps anyone. So the question is, can I run it and is it worth it?

tl;dr shitty computer, can i run minecraft?

I don't know about what cards can run what, but my computer can't run Oblivion, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, those kinds of games, but Minecraft runs fine. And if the free version works, you should be set.

It'd help if you post the actual computer specs, next time. It's cool though.

OT: Looking at the computer, it seems to have a decent enough processor. If you a semi-decent processor and any kind of video card, you should be able to run MineCraft.

You can run MineCraft on an internet tablet. Just try it and see if it works.

You could run Minecraft on two strings of pubic hair and a twig.

And whatever version you've played will be the same as the paid-for version in terms of specs needed basically, so yeah.

I have no idea how to look at specs and see what's important and what's not, technologically impaired XD

from the view of everyone it seems I can run it, thanks guys!

You should be able to play the game. The only problem I find with the video chip that I have in my laptop. Was when I accidentally set the world on fire.

I understand.

The three most important specs when looking to see if you can run a game are CPU, RAM, and GPU. CPU and RAM are pretty easy to find. Just click start, right click Computer, than click on properties. It should give you a list of your basic computer info. GPU is a bit more tricky. Go to control panel and try to find the device manager. Then look for the one that says display adapter and expand it. Whatever it device it shows when you expand it is your GPU.

How to put this... well, not every single comp can run Minecraft, if it already ran ok with (I suppose it was) the free version, then expect the full game to run similar if a bit slower, because it can be a system hogger at times, but just if you play offline/single-player, because it's constantly generating new terrain for you to explore, as opposed to online play as the world you're walking in, it's already been created in the server you're playing.

Basically, expect to play much smoother online than offline. If you play offline, just be sure to have at least 1 or 2 GB of Ram if you want to play at decent frame rates.

My computer at school can run minecraft (albeit on the "fast" settings), and it doesn't even HAVE a graphics card.

When I leave my computer on over night it can't even uphold Fallout 2 graphics and can never even run ALien Swarm. I haven't tried anything else, but I don't think it would run on my computer.

I would say at least a dual-core processor of some sort and you'll be in good shape.

Although I've run it on a 3 Ghz Pentium 4 and a 9500 GT, sooo...

Minecraft will run if you have either:
a Dual-Core processor (which you might have)

ORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

a decent Graphics Card (Which if you're on a laptop you probably don't have, and if you're on a desktop you may have)

EDIT:

What I'm basically saying is if you have a computer that happens to compute things you MIGHT be able to run it, so this post is pretty unhelpful

Not very well. Minecraft is a deceptively hungry beast. On my netbook, even with everything turned down, minecraft barely chugs along.
