as stated, its not working. i have followed the instructions as stated here:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-201285/

but at point 6 it already displays something completely different. instead of the described features, i see a bunch of folders from the : /storage/emulated/0
and doesnt matter what tune i select from them, it does not change at all. instead it goes back to step 4 without any changes. no confirmation, nothing.

i have this issue with setting a ringtone as well, but i was able to select the track manually from the music app and set it as a ringtone, but no option to select it as a notification. the only options are as a ringtone, for any of my contacts and as an alarm.

would appreciate if someone can explain to me how i can do it.

Have you tried changing it from the Messaging app itself?

Open the app, tap on the three dots in the top right corner and then choose Settings. The fourth option down is what you need to change.

Also make you you have the sound you want as your notification in the folder called, oddly enough, Notifications. This will make Android see it as a system sound and be selectable from the list. The same is true for ringtones, pop them in the Ringtones folder.

yes, done that, but the fourth option down is for me: delete old messages.
these are in my setting from top to bottom;
- default messaging app
- text message
- multimedia message
- delete old messages
- push messages
- cell broadcast
- notification
- spam filter

notification is on and thats where i see what tune will be played.and when i click on it, i end up in the this folder filled screen were selecting any tune does not work.

Do you have the wanted notification in the relevant folder?

I'm on Android 6.0.1 and as I have my SD card set as internal storage, it is in the Notifications/Ringtones folders on it that I need to have my choices in.

Then they are treated as system tracks and appear in the default selection areas.

So say you wanted track01.mp3 as your notification. You would put that in the 'Notifications' folder. You then have the choice of going to 'Settings/Sounds/Notification tone' and selecting it from the list there. That however will make it the default notification sound for everything.

The other option is via the messaging app. You really don't have a 'Sound' option there?

What version of Android are you running?

Edit: Once the track is in the folder it needs to be, sometimes my phone needs a restart for Android to see that it is there.

i have no idea what version of android i have. im not very good with these phones.
i do have a SD card but havent saved any music on it since i dont listen to music over my phone. just put a song on for my custom ringtone, which is working but notification i simply can not change.

i have some tracks in the notification folder but nothing happens when i select the tune i want. i still have this aggravating whistle tune i want to get rid of.

and no, i do not have a sound option in the messaging app. i can click on "notification" and there i can see the "notification sound" but once i click on it, i end up in the this folder section and no track i select, gets taken. just stubbornly stick with its "whistle sound" and i dont even know where the hell this file is.
