There are two parts to Palestine, the west bank and the gaza strip. The west bank is controlled by the palestine authority but Gaza is controlled by the group Hamas. Hamas has been attacking Isreal for months now, firing rockets into the country. Isreal is now counterattacking, and it seems like they plan on wiping out Hamas once and for all. We'll see how far they get before international outcry forces them to stop.

Basically it's Jews vs. Muslims and always has been. Recently, the Good Old Western Forces have decided to get involved; which inflames both sides.

Well, for about 8 years, Sderot (an Israeli city) was get constatly bombed by Palestinian.
A few days ago, Israel fought back, with a full airial attack on the missile factories/bases.

Thats the facts, I won't say anything political.

Unfortunately, due the length it's been going on the two sides don't really need a reason to kick off. Someone probably threw a stone over the wall. Escalation of violence is crazy when it's over a century old.

EDIT: I think the original issue was the Palestinians sold their land to Isreal (or vice versa) but it's their Holy land so they think it's their birthright.

I'm Jewish. A few months ago i heard about an organisation that goes around showing people how similar Jews are to everyone who's fighting them. They all look the same, sound the same, eat similar foods and live near each other. What good reason do they have to keep fighting?

Aha, that clears that up. It seems as though its going to come down to the point where the middle east will eventually just be devastated. (well more so than it is now)

The latest thing was caused by an incursion into Palestinian territory by Israeli forces looking to weed out Hamas insurgents in the West Bank apparently. These terrorists were flushed out with the covert tactic of bombing the fuck out it and hoping for the best.

Retaliations, happened etc.

Isn't 2009 going to be a ripper year?

to be fair, hamas and israel had that 6 month long ceasefire, but whithin a week of that ending israel bombed the gaza strip, mainly military targets, but with heavy civilian casaulties as well, and this was in response to about 4 rockets fired since the end of the ceasefire... with very few fired during - this is one of the main reasons for the international outcry

It's more like the British and the Germans, who are so similiar they shared the same Royal Family essentially, but still went to War twice.

Hamas says that they began launching rockets again because Israel hasn't lifted off the blockade. That's their reason. Not a very good one. Israel probably doesn't stop the blockade because of the rocket attacks...

This conflict will never end unless both sides realize that it can't be solved with weapons.

You forgot some facts. Like the fact that Israel doesn't let medical supplies to Gaza and that Israel uses collective punishments against Palestinians, like cutting off electricity. The fact that those "bases" include police stations etc. which probably have nothing to do with rocket strikes.

There's an election in Israel soon too. Geez, I wonder is there a connection between it and these airstrikes.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that Israeli are the good guys and Palestinians are the bad guys. They're both bad.

SWEET! We haven't wasted time with one of these threads for about 10 minutes! Alright!

I'll stick with my usual answer to these kinds of questions: because I'm not Emperor of the World.

...Yet.

Isn't there an election coming up in Israel? Politicians showing a hard stance, apparently the last military strike in Palestine was considered a cock up and embarrassment for the Israeli defense force. Basically both side's using a conflict to distract the populous from the fact that there leaders don't really represent them. *Shrugs, pretty standard nationalism.
