Can Susan come back to The Escapist now?

Given the recent sad news about Joystiq, I have a question that may or may not be able to be answered here: Is it possible to bring Susan Arendt back into The Escapist? She was such a big part of this site's DNA, in my opinion...

As much as I'd like Susan back, can we give Joshua like....a few weeks to see how he does? I don't think you mean it this way but I'm sure he'd appreciate a little bit of time before we start calling for a new editor in chief...

Although I would LOVE it if she came back for the "Reviews Manager" person again (to my knowledge, that position is still empty after Sterling bounced). I don't know if she'd want to come back like that given she used to run the joint but I do miss a lot of the quirkier reviews like Tokyo Jungle and whatnot. Also, I may give them another chance with the new crew but I stopped the Podcasts after she left since it just became a waste of time to listen to them afterwards (sorry old crew but you guys had ZERO direction without Susan; maybe you fixed that eventually...)

What she's gone from Joystiq now, too?!

Either way, I don't know if she would want to return. Last I heard she didn't have very positive things to say concerning our current overlords.

Well I imagine everyone is gone from Joystiq...

(Joystiq is in the process of closing down)

I'd also like to have Susan back at The Escapist, but that's up to her willingness to return (which doesn't seem likely given her attitude toward Defy Media) and Defy's willingness to hire new staff for The Escapist (which also doesn't seem likely due to the most recent layoffs being made for budgetary reasons) in additional to hiring her specifically, which is probably the least likely due to her previously mentioned attitude toward them.

Oh, don't get me wrong? Joshua is doing great, I was just wondering if it would be possible for The Escapist to court Susan back in some form...

The only thing I saw that she said about Defy Media and/or The Escapist was one frank post on a social media site that criticized a single staff member for the way in which they handled GamerGate - I guess she saw it as giving a podium to one or more people who didn't deserve one. I doubt she was the only person who disagreed with the decision, so I don't know about her attitude toward Defy or the 'Scapes. She just worded it more strongly than others whose comments I've seen.

OT: That'd be great, I think, because people clearly miss the time when she was on the site staff - apparently it was a time of more staff-user interaction and a more tightly-run ship.

Yeah, good point. That social media post is also what I was referring to and you're right about it singling out an individual from Defy. Still, I'm not holding my breath for a Susan-Escapist reunion in the near future.

No? I mean the Escapist were laying of some staff so what make you think they can afford to hire her back?

Don't hold your breath. Between what Susan supposedly said about the corporate overlords when Jim left (if that image that floated around was legitimate anyway), and said corporate overlords having to cut staff recently, I don't see it happening any time soon.

Would love it if it happened somehow though.

I like Susan like a good portion of the old people do, but she won't be coming back. We just had layoffs. That rarely means people will be hired again anytime soon. And let's not forget she badmouthed this site's owners. On twitter. Any chance of her getting re-hired is slim to none.

Susan is great, but I'd rather not see her back anyway. Her approach to gaming journalism would be a terrible fit for the Escapists new "gotta focus on the positive! :D" approach.

I'd like to have her back but considering the last shake up on the editorial level, I just don't see it happening. A man can dream...

Well, she badmouthed Jim's boss. Not sure if that was Greg or Alex in her opinion, but in either case - yeah, that was an incredibly immature thing to do.

Frankly, I would be really put off from hiring anyone who would behave this way in public. It just seems to demonstrate a profound lack of judgement on their part. Heck, one of the first things I do before I even consider someone for a job these days is to look for their LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter profiles. You can weed out a lot of idiots by seeing who constantly uses streams of profanity or posts pictures of themselves smoking bongs.

Also, isn't Susan too senior (as in accomplished) now to be anything else than the editor?

As nice as that would be, I very much doubt it.

Besides the recent layoffs, I am given to understand that she quite comprehensively burned her bridges.

Depends on what you mean by "senior". John Keefer, the site's news and features manager, is 56 years old. I'm fairly certain Susan isn't that old yet.
