Can the Playstation Eye already do what Xbox Kinect does?

I'm going to say yes...but that's also because they can also think of a name before Xbox does.
That, and from all the stuff I have seen or heard about it...it really just seems like a glorified Eye-toy, no offense to the 360 crowd =/

Edit: Scratch that, my eyes didnt seem to be working right

I hated the Eye Toy. It was nothing but watching yourself whack at objects that flew across the screen. You may as well have video taped yourself swatting mosquitoes and then edited to video to make it look like you were a giant in a city swatting planes.

In terms of those five technical bits, yeah, they are pretty similar. Kinect plans to actually read your movements for a wide variety of game types (Racing, fighting, sports, exc) rather than just the watching yourself swat at things crap.

I've already read that once, it's full of crap. They seem to forget that Kinect has more than just a single camera built in, and as they have actually updated their article to say (I'm surprised they tried to do any fact checking), they don't have any kind of confirmed specs for Kinect.

Bottom line that article is just pointless speculation written by someone who really comes off sounding like a Playstation fanboy.

Both are pointless and unneeded. So yes, it already does what the Xbox Kinect will do.

None taken.

OT: I thing that motion controls can fuck right off stop being made because it is pointless and annoying.
Ehh, I'm kind of mixed on motion controls. I mean in some cases they work really well, and add/allow a lot of new experiences, but also on the downside, a lot of crap is being made for it, or games just use the motion controls just because they are there.

I do like how they have brought back rail shooters though. Those things are fun as hell, single or co-op.

Well, the main reason crap is being made with motion controls is the fact that a lot of casual gamers enjoy them. Yeah, the rail shooters are pretty awesome on the Wii, but other than that, motion controls always feel out of place in whatever game they are in.

Sweet Wiimote, though

Kinect scans the body and traces movements, the Playstation Eye just sees it...I think. I'm not bothered really. Just give me a controller any day.

Continuing about motion controls, I don't think we should stop making them, I just don't think they're good enough right now for me to enjoy. Unlike stereoscopic 3D, I think motion sensor technology could evolve into at least part of the "fully immersing simulation" that video games always dreamed of being. There was an extra punctuation on this a while back, but I have to say I disagree with Yahtzee on this one. Motion controls could work.

I think the first thing to do right now is for developers to stop pretending like the future is now (developing games that try to make you feel like you are in direct. 1:1 control of a player avatar) and work with what they have. And stop making games that are just bland collections of minigames, diet/exercise supplements, and (worst of all) ports of games that work better on other systems. Shooters are indeed nice though. Don't try too hard, but try a little at least.

Sadly, with all of the scaling back that they keep doing with Kinect it seems like it might end up being the same as an Eyetoy. Well, not exactly, but it does definitely sound a lot less impressive than it did when they first started talking about it.

Pretty much, yeah. The Kinect is just a glorified Eye-Toy that people are just supposed to go crazy over just because Micro$oft made it. Plus it is more expensive and can only be used on the slim (another "original" idea) without buying an adapter. Of course this is just my opinion.

I didn't see anything in that article about Kinect having multiple cameras, measuring/calculating in 3 dimensions, or pivoting automatically to track movements (thus having a greater than 57-degree horizontal field).

I'm not trying to defend Kinect (I still think it's overpriced and unnecessary), but the article seems to be more than a bit skewed.

I'm of the belief that Kinect's biggest selling point is also it's biggest flaw. Not all actions should be mimicked to play a game. If done.... 1:1 I think is the expression, I'd have no problem acting out some of the arm movements as it could add some deeper levels to fisticuffs or swordplay. However, I still want a controller for movement and camera management, as well as the mundane meta-game mechanics like menus.

I will continue to keep motion controls out of my house hold. They are fun at parties but I really like my controller. Thumb speed is useless when you're flailing.

OT: I really don't care who wins the motion control war. Personally I think that article was a little biased but I still feel indifferent to it all.
