Can we ease it up with some of these advertisements?

I would appreciate it if the escapist would use advertisements that don't you know, slow down my whole computer with the amount of RAM they're taking up? It's very hard to even type because my text comes 1 and a half seconds after I type it.

So can we please use less elaborate ads that make my computer run like its from 1985?

EDIT: for all those heartless dick-faces that want to go "DERP!!DERP! OH WELL JUST PAY FOR THE PUBLISHER'S CLUB! DERP-DE-DERP!" or saying "THATS HOW THE SITE GENERATES REVENUE! DERP!"

im completely aware of these factors but
A) I dont have a credit card so i cant pay for the publisher's club anyways
B) They could always use different ads, right? Im not saying "GET RID OF ALL ADS! DERP!" im saying my computer has a connection speed of 100 MBps and 3gb of RAM, there is no excuse for having ads that take up THAT much of my RAM that if affects all the rest of my computer as well.

Get over it. If you don't want 'em, pay for that fancy membership.

Before I got a better computer and faster internet, there were two ads that would always lag the hell out of my computer. The video advertisements for that one post-apocalyptic MMO, and the one for DDO. I don't have that problem anymore, but I definitely sympathize. You have a point.

Nope sorry. These type of ads are there to help the site generate revenue through sponsorships. If you don't like the ads well tough tits.

No, that is an entirely unreasonable attitude. Maybe the site-owners have no reason to listen to him because they need the ads to run the place, but you equally cannot force him into that if he doesn't want to.

Then there's the first part of my post: "Get over it."

Two very clear options. Chose one or the other.

I understand. It was the worst for me when the Starcraft 2 ads were plastered in every nook and cranny of the site and constantly ran whether or not I moused over.

Buy the frickin' PubClub membership. It's cheap, it allows you to browse ad-free, and you get hi-def videos. Which rock.

You've got problems with your PC there, I use a 7 year old laptop with 256mgs of RAM, why do I not have issues with ads loading.

I've never had any problems with advertisements lagging up my computer and it's pretty crappy. Plus your connection speed is twice what I have and you have 2 more gigs of RAM than I do.

With that in mind, you may have some sort of elaborate virus of the computer variety for all anyone knows.

Yeah I had problems with ads too, I have six gigs of ram and cable 'net I've seen get pretty damn fast (IDK teh connection speed, but I torrent a few gigs file (fansubs ;3) in less than an hour, and my ping's always good, so I consider it decent) and the old vindictus ads would literally freeze my browser until they played the first loop....at 1/24th speed, and trying to scroll/whatever gave it that white overlay that's basically saying "your program's about to crash" IDK what the deal was though, if people with lower-end comps have no problem, and people with higher end comps do....IDK lol (unrelated, Vindictus is win and free :D)

...you didnt read my post did you? i dont have a credit card, so i cant buy the publisher club membership. plus, it expires after a while and id have to constantly pay for it, right?

no, even if it was 7 dollars a month, id rather spend that money on a monthly subscription to runescape, which blocks the ads AND gives me access to over 200 hours of extra content, with the escapist id get the same thing minus the ads.

and besides, im talking about the ads that are in the background of the page and the ones that play automatically (not in front of videos, because those dont do anything)

Then pony up or quit whining. And I don't see any ads. At all. Ever. $20 a year. A YEAR. $1.66 a month.

(this post not paid for or affiliated with Themis Media Group, the Escapist magazine, or any other entity or organization. It just looks that way.)

Not necessarily. I know it isn't the Escapists fault, but I have issues from time to time with some of the flash ads. They cause the flash plugin for firefox to crash.

Come on dude. The site is free to use. They don't even ban you for using an ad blocker, and they could redirect you to a page telling you to turn off your ad blocker if they wanted to. I specifically set ad block plus to exclude this site because I don't feel like ripping them off and the ads here are a far cry away from as annoying as some sites. Pop overs? Ads with sound? I thought we left that garbage behind after the 90s, who in the hell thought it was a good idea to bring back the most annoying of the ads?

A game journalism site suspending users for bashing their sponsors? Somehow that doesn't settle well with me.

I also do not like how intensive the ads are. They slow my droid to hell, this site is not mobile friendly at all. I also don't like how the ad for the publisher's club at the top sometimes blocks off the community button and a few others.

I've been on the web since there was a web- and I'm pretty familiar with how things work and sites wanting more money... But many of them have done it, over the years, without a subscription and while streamlining the ads; making them less intrusive.

So I don't think everyone should be so quick to run to their defense- there's always room for improvement while still making plenty of money, I'm sure.

I think you'll find its a game journalism site suspending users for describing and promoting methods to get around the sites advertisments. Thus making the site less desireable ad space to sponsors.

I've never seen someone suspended for "bashing" sponsors. Declaring one's use of adblocking software on the other hand is against the forum rules and guidelines.

Thats a problem with Firefox, its a feature creep and all the plugins are clashing with each other because Mozilla can't test everyone very "unique" set ups.

Get Opera, for Opera is king, its lightning fast and hardly crashes, if fact its the best at site side plug ins that is really popular amongst privately owned sites like this one. It also has a smaller memory footprint then Chrome when opening several tabs, Chrome is the best with one tab open but Opera starts beating it when you've got several tabs open.

I have gotten used to firefox. Besides the browser never crashes on me. It's almost always the plugin container that crashes. I tried Opera, and I wasn't really a fan. I did like Chrome a little after I used it for a while. Still I suppose I could give Opera another try. The last time I tried it was a very long time ago, and I hear good things about it these days.
