I've been wondering this for a while. I'm a unemployed student and haven't been able to fit gaming in the same budget as food. I own an old ps2 (is there any other kind) and a mac that can run small things through parallels. The closest to a new gen console is my mates xbox360 which we sort of co-buy games for. Am I a gamer?

I read escapist articles, understand the pain of drm and duke nukem forever, laugh at yahtzee's jokes about god of war rip-offs and wish immersion returned to rpgs. But I will probably never play a game like mass effect 2 or bayonetta, simply because they will be far forgotten by the time I get a console.

What do you think? Is interest alone enough to be a gamer?

If you play games and take an interest in them why wouldn't you be a gamer?

you can be a gamer with an old school NES. one doesn't need the most modern hardware or games to be considered a gamer.

Couldn't agree more. I'd go so far as to say it's pure snobbery if you think you must have a PS3 or XBox 360 and a overly powerful PC to be considered a gamer.

Of course you're a gamer! I've considered myself a gamer for some time now despite never having owned an up-to-date gaming PC (much less any good games for the one I do have) and only this year have I actually gone out and bought my own consoles. Before that I never owned more than perhaps 8 games for any console my family had. We would just continually rent the same games that we liked over and over again until we beat them.

For one to be considered a gamer they have to have passion for it. Where as some look at Call of Duty 4 as a nice time-waster a gamer looks at it in a similar vein as a sport.

But that's just my opinion.

You mean can you be a gamer with the best console ever and a computer that recently got Steam support?

Of course not, that would destroy the system!

You're not missing much. I'm in the same boat with a Mac and a PS2, I go to my girlfriend's where she's got a ps3. The only games I've found worth the money are the multiplayer ones (apart from Arkham Asylum. I admit I fangirled.) where I play with someone. Which proves it's not the game that's good it's the experience of being with the people you're playing with.

Old school gaming is what you'll really want if you want to enjoy your self. As a student you want games to entertain and relax you. Not for pissing you off for spending a lot of money on something that was "sort of okay I guess."

Hell yes. I'm in a similar situation, only I also have an old GameCube. They're all good systems, and they can all play games. ;]

PS2 = Best Console Ever

So, yeah. Yeah, you can.

And Mac is getting Steam soon...Although what games on Steam will work or not, is a question I can't answer.

You have no idea of how wrong you are.

Sure I might own a PS3 at the moment (coupled with a PS2, a Gamecube, Dreamcast, PS1, Nintendo DS and a pretty outdated computer), but recently I've been going through a shall we say economical dryspell and thus there are quite a few titles on my "to buy" list that will probably remain there for a few months to come depending on how things turn out.

But I can assure you that even when I do have cash and brand new games sitting in my console I STILL go and check out older titles and play old classics. For instance, just recently I went and checked out the first few parts of the Hitman series (a series of games that I sort of missed the first time around). And it's not unknown for me to hunt down older games I have yet to buy and get them on the second hand market just to be able to place them on the game shelf and know that they're there for future use.

Retro gaming is awesome, adn you'll most likely indulge yourself in it, even when you do possess the most recent and flashy console. Gaming history is just as important as any other history... At least for a real gamer. :p

I've said this before and I will say it again....

If you play games.... You are a gamer.

There are just some people out there that are more of a gamer.

If you regularly play games for fun, you are a gamer.
