Hello fellow escapists. I've seen threads that ask about favorite foods or drinks, but how about whether or not you can actually cook? What do you cook? Do you actually cook? What's your signature dish? Where did you learn how to cook? What kind of foods do you typically cook?
I started learning how to cook when I was about four or so, when I started helping my mom cook in the kitchen. First it was little things, like helping to bake cookies and other similar small tasks. I cooked my first meal by myself when I was about nine or so and I made a pizza.
I learned how to cook from my mom, who comes from a big Southern family, so I know how to cook traditional Southern cuisine. I also learned how to cook from my dad, who was a chef and studied at the Culinary Institute of America, so I know how to cook all sorts of food because of his classical training.
I have to say, though, that my signature dish is something of a toss up, because I have several dishes that I've made from whatever was around at the time. One was a stuffed pork tenderloin, which was stuffed with spinach and mozeralla cheese along with salt, pepper, and garlic, then rubbed down inside and out with balsamic vinegar. Another is my curry chicken/pork with vegetables and rice. Yet another would be my stir-fry, which I sautee soy, terryaki, a little bit of sriracha, sesame oil, and garlic and onion salts together to make the sauce for the stir-fry, which I add the vegetables and either chicken or shrimp to.
I also have a dish I call "Vaguely strogonoff" (spelling? XD) that's made like beef strogonoff, but with left over roast and any vegetables from that. It might not sound good, but it turned out really well.
