And I say "can" and not "Will you" or "do you" because of the following:

I recently got a copy of Pokemon red for 5 bucks. I used to be a hardcore Pokemon fan when I was younger so I basically bought the game to get a chance to play it. already had Pokemon yellow and truly, there's not that much of a difference between those two. In theory, i was eager to play the game. But when I started playing, I lost all interest and I got bored.

This isn't the only game that cause that reaction on me. In my book, if I already finished a game, going back and replaying it just doesn't appeal to me (It also depends on the kind of game). It doesn't matter how good or bad the game is; I just feel like playing something new, something that will still surprise me and challenge me.

So my question is: Am I alone on this? Is anyone capable to stop playing, let's say, a game that came out about a week ago (And you like) in order to play an older game that you've already beat?
And yeah, this question only applies to games you've already beat, not old games you haven't played.

Depends on the game really. I can't stand to replay some of my other games, but I'd gladly replay Persona 3 and Freespace 2 forever.

Yep. I do a yearly play thorium of the first two Deus Ex games, will have to add HR to that now. I'll do a playthrough of Chrono Trigger every now and then, the KoToR games I keep going back to, am currently doing a playthrough of Jedi Academy, also just finished an Alpha Protocol play through. Have to do a Hitman playthrough before the new one as well.

For comparison, I recently finished Dishonored, and have been playing CSGO and FIFA 13 as well. Next on the list is XCOM, Hitman, Guild Wars 2 and possibly The Old Republic.

I can replay my games , but not right after having completed it. I need a minumum of two years before i can do a second playthrough of any game . I tend to most play jrpgs , and my backlog is so huge i don't even need to replay a game . Ever . But i keep al my games . And when i am old and retired, i intend to replay ALL OF THEM .

For some reson i thought this was going to be a " i can't reply my old games because of graphics " thread .

Depend on how old the game is. While I can go back and played Phantasy Star Online E1 & 2 with no problems however trying to played Pokemon Red again would put me off especially when I have been playing the newer incarnation of the franchise.

There is one game I will always want to play regardless of how old it is.
Summon Knight: Swordcraft story 2
-sniff- It is without a doubt the best game I have every played, absolutely brilliant.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

Gameplay wise, the game is very dated, but I play it for the atmosphere and RPG elements.

That game still has some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in a game, and modern urban settings are few and far between for RPGs.

Replaying RPGs with choice? Sure, do it all the time.

Replaying linear games, even if they got great gameplay and story? Uhuh, that's as rare as it gets.

I do it regularly. Sid Meier's Alpha Centuri is my favourite and the best Civ game and Pokemon games I always replay

In some games, you can get a very different experience based on chosen play style, dialogue choices, and objective completion. Those games have a great replay value. The best example for this is Deus Ex. Other examples: The Fallout games (except Tactics and BoS), Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines, The Quest For Glory series, Alpha Protocol and The Witcher series.

I recently picked up Morrowind again as the overhaul v3.0 was just realeased.
There are some GBA games, I have played over and over, like any of the fire emblem, advance wars, or final fantasy tactics advance. There are also a few PC games I have played over and over, Star Wars Republic commando and Battlefront, to name but 2. Some old games really hold up.

Eh... those two games aren't really all that old... and gameplay hasn't changed that much since then... though having said that... when are they going to make a SW:RC2?!

BTW... interesting choice of avatar... Mr Collins...?!

OT: As with so many potential views: depends on the game. Things change as time goes on and gaming is actually one of the faster evolvers. I can't actually bring myself round to playing pre-1995 games and enjoying them, even though I've played a fair few of them before.

I really mostly played the first Battlefront, and that came out in 2004, which was when I was 10 and Republic Commando came out the year after. I'll admit, neither of them are really that old but they are games from my childhood, which is what the OP was really asking about.

A sequel to Republic Commando was planned, it was going to be called Imperial Commando, which sounds awesome. Unfortunately, the game was cancelled before the concept art was even completed.

I had an amazing English teacher in High School, and we did Pride and Prejudice, and she decided that I was very similar to the character, and so, proceeded to call me that. It stuck as a nickname and I tend to use in online (except on the escapist, because I joined it before any of that happened)

Well, I replay Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger, Fatal Frame 2, and now I'm eager to go back and see if I can find an inexpensive copy of Dark Cloud 2 to enjoy. So yes, I do tend to replay games that I really like.

Actually, I often wonder if the bar for what makes a good game has changed, because a lot of the older games I've played feel stronger than many of the big releases that come out today.

If it's been a while, then heck yeah I can.

Have you ever been doing something, then imagine what it would be like for future-you to suddenly appear and start be absolutely superb at it while you just sit there amazed? I pop in an old game, wind back my internal chronometer, and it's like that. Except I'm future me.
And there isn't any shortage of how amazing I am at them. I must have every gaming experience archived in my tendons or something, because I can brush them off, warm them up, and start blasting through everything as if it were 2001 again.

BRB, getting Pokémon Crystal.

Yep, I can still go back and play my old games. Hell, this weekend I'd gone back home for my Dad's 65th birthday, and at midnight I was playing through Spyro: Year of the Dragon, back for the PS1. Obviously it's aged graphically, but a good game for me remains a good game, and Spyro 3 is still a great game.

I usually burn my way through both KOTOR's on a yearly basis. Hell, even started playing back through the Jak series not long ago, as well as San Andreas. I've also been playing a fair bit of Diablo II lately.

Old games are the best, and give me hope for the industry.

Hold on a second, playing through Sands of Time again.

I do, yeah. Usually games that can be played through in a few ways or in co-op.

I struggle with going through older games sometimes though, especially if I've played newer versions of it. I tried going back to Oblivion after a bit of time on Skyrim and couldn't hack it.
