I just got back from the Canadian Videogame Awards, and my god, was it ever bad. Between awful material (including skits delivered by guests reading from a teleprompter), awkward delivery of unfunny jokes that received no laughs, technical difficulties that resulted in a series of scripted exchanges needing to be repeated for the cameras, and a ceremony that dragged on 45 minutes over time, the CVA 2013 was agony to watch. By the end of it, I just felt really, really bad for Elias Toufexis, whom I know is actually very charismatic and clever.

Was anyone else in attendance? What did you think of the whole business?

I've never heard of that award before. Just googled it and at the very least they have more or less reasonable nominees and winners, although Far Cry 3 winning the best character award... for who? Fucking Vaas? Jeez.
OH MY GOD. FIFA 12 got Game of the Year for 2012. What the actual fuck Canada?! You don't even play Football here!

Yeah, that's kind of not surprising. First I'd ever heard of it was about one hour ago when there was a brief mention of it on my Twitter feed.

Hmm, it's run by Future Shop/Best Buy, and hosted at FanExpo Vancouver.

Aha - it's to support Canadian based game developers, thus EA Sports (their studio in Vancouver), Deus Ex:HR in Eidos Montreal, Bioware in Edmonton, etc., etc.

It's a great idea as there's a ton of talented people and studios here, and helps advertise us.

Sucks the presentation was so shoddy from what you've said.

Wait, Canadians exist? :)

OT: Too bad for you guys. Having a crappy awards show for a medium like ours which doesn't have much in the way of award shows is disappointing.

I didn't know this even existed. I know Canada has a good magazine Comics & Gaming Magazine which is pretty good. I'll have to check the latest issues to see if they have written anything about these Videogame awards. But you know, Canada's version of Hollywood is the National Film Board, which is subsidized by the Ministry of Canadian Heritage (ie Canada's film industry is state funded), so maybe this videogame award ceremony was government funded? And that's why it was so lame? lolz i dunno

Do you have the name or a link for the awards so I can look it up?

It will be broadcast at some point on City TV. I think Toufexis said 2 weeks?

And if we're strictly talking videogames, there's BioWare, EIDOS Montreal, David Hayter, Mark Meer, and a whole host of Canadian voice talent. Tara Strong comes to mind.

I can't stand it when Canadians internalize the "hurr hurr what's Canada oh you mean our hat?" mentality pitched by so much American culture.

Ouch. I heard about it a while back and thought I might give it a watch, but forgot about it. Good thing I didn't, I guess.

Captcha: one way street

It sure is.

The only thing an American like me is jealous of, is your universal health care. And maple syrup. Sweet, sweet maple syrup

Sad to hear it went that poorly, I'll have to look out for it though. I'm interested in seeing for myself how it did.

Little sad some people believe Canada has nothing big to attribute. We've produced a lot of incredible talent and ideas. Look it up yourself if you doubt.

I wasn't trying to make anyone jealous. I was just trying to point out that there has to be at least one thing a Canadian can find interesting from within our own country.

But yes, maple syrup is most definitely the tits.
