Don Van Vliet, more popularly known by his stage name 'Captain Beefheart' died yesterday (possibly today in the States), as a result of difficulties with his multiple sclerosis.
I hadn't seen a thread about him yet, so I decided I'd put this out there, for anyone who was interested.
He was one of the most influential experimental musicians throughout the late 60's to 70's, and various bands have cited Captain Beefheart as a major influence, among them The White Stripes, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Placebo even initially named themselves after a line from one of his songs.
Captain Beefheart meant a lot to me, personally. His music was amongst the first the gripped me and made me think, as good music should, and what inspired me to actually 'listen' to music, and I feel that I am a much better person today for having done so.
I'm off to a party, now. Perhaps not a party of special things to do, but a party all the same.
Might find a nice bottle of red and get stupid.
