Captcha!? Really?

I just noticed the addition of Captcha at the bottom of threads for those of us who want to post. Now, I am all for the cut down on spam, but, really, isn't there an easier way to deal with this? I, and I know many others here are not fans of the whole captcha thing.

Is there any other way we could deal with this other than captcha?

EDIT: Currently only seeing it on about half of the threads that I view. I assume this is being implemented even still.

Huh it seems to be gone already...

Yeah unfortunately there isn't currently, a spam detection filter can only go so far and spam will just keep changing to avoid it.

A captcha is really the only sure-fire way to stop bot spams.

It's only every few posts, to help catch bots off guard.

Although I haven't seen any spam here to warrant the Captcha. so whatever, I guess.

As long as I don't have to re-do it every post, then why not?
Also, this is pretty much the most spam free forum I've seen, why implement captcha?

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I feel like I jumped the gun a bit with this thread. It was everywhere, I posted, it was on half the threads I viewed, and now its gone. Strange...

Bah... I really hoped this site could stay captcha-free. I don't notice a lot of spam usually. Is it really that bad that we need the captcha?

had it twice in a row just now, kinda annoying but will be OK as long as it doesn't stick around too long

There were a couple of threads yesterday, started by a bot. I think it's fine this way, as long as the website registers the IP/Cookies of our browsers we only have to type in the Captcha once per day. So it's no biggie. Whatever keeps the site clean.

Depends on the size of the attack and since bots don't ever have to give up and can make several posts a second then it can get really bad, really quick.

I wish they were more legible; had to try one four times before I got it right.

I still haven't had to deal with it, but as long as it isn't too bad I don't mind. I've seen Captchas with musical notes in them.

Edit: After posting this would be the first time I see it...

I don't really understand this, the spam here isnt nearly as horrendous as on IGN. But I guess better safe than sorry.

I suppose I could be ok with that. As long as I only have to do it once a day, I'm pretty fine with that.

It displays based on the number of times the logged in account has posted today. If you're "due" for a captcha, you'll see it on every thread until you post while completing it. Once you complete it, you won't see it on any threads for a while.

That's how we're trying to keep the annoyance to a minimum for individual users. Based on my stats, 95% of the forum posters here should have to complete it a maximum of once per day.

Hmm, I have not noticed it. Even though I do not think I have ever seen spambots invade The Escapist.

Not counting the human spambots known as /i/nsurgents.

I don't mind it. I've seen quit a few bot-attacks in my time here. If this stops them, then thats good.

And no, there isn't another way to deal with bots. Unless you have a great solution, in which case I'm sure the guys in the Tech Team group would love to hear it.

Not really an issue, while we don't get many bot-spams here the risk is always there and we have had some truly hilarious ones in the past, but they must be hell for the mod team...

Well, thank you for the response. I am ok with that. I got worried because I saw it everywhere after I had already filled it out.

Can't we somehow implement this?

It's either this or we start limiting signups.

I still like the idea of nuking the dudes who send the bots.

I'll go get... I forgot, who is it with an unholy amount of posts, has that .gif with the nuke exploding and whales flying everywhere that says "Nuke The Whales" and his title says "The Noble Nuker"?

I feel like I am the biggest dip for forgetting...
