OK, well, her old song did too... But hear me out!

This isn't reallly a 'diss Carly Rae Jepsen' thread. For the most part, I really could care less what she does, you know? I guess some people found 'call me maybe' catchy, and that's totally fine.

But something really irked me recently; and I'm just curious: Escapist, what am I missing? Am I crazy, or do others mirror my own feelings?

Since it was featured on youtube, I decided to listen to her new song, "This kiss", out of curiosity. The lines -immediately- stood out to me; I'll post the lyrics here:

I went out last night
I'm going out tonight again
Anything to capture your attention (your attention)
And she's a real sweet girl
And you know I got a boy
Details we both forgot to mention (forgot to mention)

And you, I always know where you are
And you always know where I am
We're taking it way too far
But I don't want it to end

This kiss is something I can't resist
Your lips are undeniable
This kiss is something I can't risk
Your heart is unreliable
Something so sentimental
You make so detrimental
And I wish it didn't feel like this
Cause I don't wanna miss this kiss
I don't wanna miss this kiss

You know you're just my type
And your eyes are lock and key, to my heart
Tempting my confession (my confession)
And you're a real hot thing
But you know i've got a boy somewhere
So can you feel the tension? (Feel the tension)

And you, I'm dancing to where you are
And your dancing to where I am
We're taking it way too far
But I don't want it to end

This kiss is something I can't resist
Your lips are undeniable
This kiss is something I can't risk
Your heart is unreliable
Something so sentimental
You make so detrimental
And I wish it didn't feel like this
Cause I don't wanna miss this kiss
I don't wanna miss this kiss

But if you ask me to
I couldn't, I couldn't, I
You're leaning closer and
I shouldn't, I shouldn't, I
But if you ask me to
I couldn't, I couldn't, I
I shouldn't, I shouldn't
I don't wanna miss this kiss

This kiss is something I can't resist
Your lips are undeniable
This kiss is something I can't risk
Your heart is unreliable
Something so sentimental
You make so detrimental
And I wish it didn't feel like this
Cause I don't wanna miss this kiss
I wish it didn't feel like this
I don't wanna miss this kiss

If you watch the music video, it's even stranger. She's having the time of her life, and the whole song has this really dancy/happy feel to it. And at the end, she's making out with the guy in the pool >_>

So the point is, I go onto the comments page expecting some people to be like "Well...that's ridiculously skanky". We have here, a song that is -celebrating- a girl going out to a dance party (stalking this guy that she already found to be eye candy in a previous party) and actively cheating on her original boyfriend.

On the page, there was nothing but praise, like "wow she's so hot" , or "I love this song!".

Is this like a new young generation thing? Because honestly, my mind is full of fuck! ಠ_ಠ

I'm watching it now....

Watched.

Eh, it's catchy. People in highschool (the major demographic of pop music if I am correct) don't give a shit what's in the lyrics really.

I didn't find the theme of the song "skanky" just shitty. The music was alright, but not as good as call me maybe.

It's for a drizzle of romantic tension for the shallow populous that care to take these pop songs on board. Hell, the whole song is about a risky conflicting but overpowering lust, temptation, if you will. There are plenty of pop songs with this or a similar theme (I kissed a girl is similar, off the top of my head).
Basically, it allows for more evocative and memorable lyrics to be produced with greater ease (primary point of any industry-produced pop song), and gives an equally evocative topic for the droll listener to mindlessly think about.

I didn't think anyone escaped 'Call Me Maybe'.

OP: Songs have that kind of theme all of the time, why does it bother you that people didn't call her skanky?

I kinda liked 'Call Me Maybe', but then I only listen to the radio for an hour a day, so I tend to not get oversaturated too quickly. I hadn't heard this new track yet, just gave it a listen. And my first reaction is it's incredibly bland. There's no hook, the music is meh and the lyrics do nothing either.

Carly Rae jepson just stinks of the kind of high school shit everyone hates.

There's this song, and the original, which at one point pretty much stated that she was popular with men, but appeared to be going after this one guy who appears to be the only one resistant to her charms. Sure, you're free to do that, and I probably sound annoying as all hell, but c'mon, you're telling me seeing someone go after the one thing/person they can't have has never annoyed you?

And this...well, this just confirms it. Todd in the shadows has called her disgustingly cute and childish before, but I think he was missing the point. She isn't just acting like she's in high school, she's acting like the worst high school has to offer.

Perhaps I'm overreacting, perhaps my hatred of all things over-optimistic and cute is getting control of me, or maybe this is just my bitterness at being an eternal failure in relationships, but for reasons fair or otherwise, she really pisses me off.

Oh no, I'm not really telling people to call her skanky. I'm just shocked that no one seemed to be the least bit bothered by the fact that the song was basically depicting this young aged girl bragging about how she was cheating on her boyfriend. Unless, of course, you're telling me this is completely normal nowadays. (that's actually part of the question)

There's no air of conflict/regret at all in the video either (some artists can pull that off, and it appears much deeper and less about 'oh baby you're so hot yeah'; it's very 'party all the time' ish, which implies 'all fun/no regret'. I don't really recall a lot of music that gets away with being so blatant about it without being purposely ironic/tongue-in-cheek (like, Avril's 'Girlfriend' song, which is essentially the same thing, but taken much less seriously (further accented by the tone of her music video. This is a subtlety in music, and it creates the general aura behind the song.

With Jensen, she seems to hold legitimate/non-ironic pride with regards to her lechery. Or, that's at least how I interpreted it. So the lack of 'wut' responses kind of worried me, because I was wondering how relationships were currently interpreted by teenagers today. Again, it might just be me; I'm just seeing what others have to say.

I dunno, I think she's pretty hot. Even if I can't tell her and Taylor Swift apart...

As for the song itself, it's just high school pop. Don't get too worked up over it

Well, that's a bit unsettling. At least it won't be as big of a hit as "Call Me Maybe".

However, it's not that terrifying to me, considering it's on the same music station as Pitbull, Ke$ha and ilk.

Ok, while some songs might have deep meaning- many of them don't.
I seriously doubt young people are taking relationship advice from Carly Rae Jepsen.

Bit of an overreaction, really.
Besides, there are loads of songs about cheating.

It's not exactly new, as it was released as a single before her album containing even more songs -- which are more recent and therefore more "new," I guess.

Anyway, I like it. It's not the greatest on the album (to me, that's either "Drive" or "Guitar String/Wedding Ring," and I think "Drive" is going to make a good single), but it's a good song and I like listening to it.

Whaaat!! I so did not realize that the Good Time singer is the same person as "Call me Maybe".
I thought "Call Me Maybe" was some sort of pop song that has been around since the 80s or something.

I think her new song and Taylor Swift sangs are quite skanky when you actually pay attenion to it.
But the thing is, I dont pay attention to it.

But then again, most songs are like that. The tune just buffers it.

It's funny how people who claim to listen to songs for the lyrics let these kind of things go over their head, same with the Cher Lloyd track earlier this year which also promoted the same thing if I remember correctly! Also the lyrics are really bad from reading your post.

Watching the video...

*4 minutes later*

Holy fuck! *vomits* Ahh! Drown it out! Drown it out with Lenka!... Aaaah that's better...

Anyway it's a stupid theme fora song and it's not a good message for anyone who takes that kinda shit on board.

But worst of all, it's just bad music. It's lazy and boring and dull and really rather dim. Music like this shouldn't be allowed to over shadow the actually good music out there...

Whew. Faith in humanity +1 lol.

I guess maybe it's just like going to a Bieber page (no offense to Jensen fans). I'm talking about the aura (0% of the population calling her out on lechery); so the youtube page comments must be an extremely inaccurate viewpoint in comparison to the population as a whole. Sounds like common sense when you say it aloud =__=

So there are plenty of people elsewhere who are either unaware of the song as a whole or finding it 'wtf' like I am.

Like the song, or hate it, I'm just relieved to know I'm not alone. Thought I was going crazy :0

God I hate that response. It does nothing to refute the argument. "ooh, I'm a hater. Yeah, with good reason."
