Is the cat and dog drowning in a whirlpool of some kind?

Dog all the way. Cats are more convenient since they basically take care of themselves but cats are assholes and dogs are awesome! Even if they do poop in the house once in a while...

I can pet a dog all day and he'll be happy with me. If you pet a cat for not enough time, they bug you and if you pet them a second longer than they want it, they'll claw you. You do not know what this ticking timer has left on it...

If a burglar has broken in, my dog will kill itself if it has to in order to protect me. The cat, at best, will accidentally trip the burglar while running away.

My dog looks so cute! Look at him!!!

Here's an artist rendering of all cats ever...

That text isn't photoshopped in. I'm pretty sure that message just hovers above all cats at all times...

Cat person reporting for duty.

Dogs are too... dependant. Cats are cool with just doing their own thing and just stopping by for a feed and a pat.

If I drop dead on the lounge room floor, a dog will (well, might) alert the neighbours with its mournful howls. A cat will eat my corpse.

I'm also a cat person for this reason. Cats still love and show affection, it's just not the desperate, needy kind of love dogs express. I don't care that they're more aloof sometimes, to me that's a lot better than something I've got to walk 3 times a day in rain or shine, hot or cold. And dogs are loud and smell bad. I have never in my life heard of someone bathing a cat because it smelled due to natural causes, yet dogs need to be bathed frequently as a matter of course.

Dog. They have loyalty, enthusiasm and offer companionship and exercise for their whole lifespan. Kittens are cute and all, but once they grow up, they just stop giving a shit and go their own way.

I reject your insistence on binary choice and elect to go with the third option:

CatDog.

(Not my image, unfortunately.)

More seriously, definitely a cat person. There are some breeds of dog that I think are proper adorable, but nothing really gets me the same way as a cute little ball of fluff.

In all seriousness, I'm in no way a dog person and very much a cat person. The amount of care that goes into properly caring for a dog does not fit my personality and lifestyle. Cats just do things, poop in a convenient box, eat food I put out for them, and sleep the rest of the time. Sometimes they even sleep on me. Which is magical.

That damned beagle woke me up two nights in a row this week by scratching at my door, so cat wins simply on principle.

I'm more inclined towards cats since I don't have to take them out for a walk or keep their bathroom breaks in mind. Dogs are a little more trouble. I love them though.

I've met some very passive dogs that couldn't give a fuck about anything and anybody. Not every dog is Marley & Me. By contrast, lots of cats are desperately whiny for attention. It's all about what kind of owner you are, how the animal was raised and race probably factors in as well.

I also think dogs are a little more empathetic towards their owners. The smarter ones can pick up on their feelings pretty easily. Whereas cats don't tend to level with their owners. Hence the whole "aloof" perception.

Turtle. Happy, active critters that live forever, don't bark, don't have a litter box. Also, just as cute as a kitten. http://www.lftshop.com/pelomedusa-subrufa,fr,4,PELSUB.cfm

Can I cheat and say both?

I love how loving and eager dogs are to show their love for you, jumping up on you and licking you in the face. On the other hand, I love the independence of cats; My cats decide for themselves when it's time to cuddle, but they never complain when I want to cuddle them, either.

Dogs are optimal for taking on a walk and perfect for a healthy lifestyle, but cats are superior when it comes to picking up and snuggling them.

Dogs are open about their love, cats are a bit more tsundere; They pretend that them constantly being in the same room as you is a massive coincidence.

As for which one I prefer from a pet owner's perspective? Cats. Like stated above, not because I don't like dogs. I'm always busy with something, be it choir practice, school or taekwondo, so I wouldn't have time to care for a dog. A cat is pretty good at taking care of itself, especially if it's an outdoors cat.

I find it perplexing when people describe dogs as "needy". If a dog is needy, its typically down to that dog's personality rather than dogs as a whole. I've had a ton of dogs over the years (three at the moment) and I can only recall one I'd describe remotely as needy and he was a rescue dog. Mine are typically happy to see me, they like to interact a bit but ultimately they're no more demanding than a cat in terms of interaction.

Also, lets not forget that there have been a few cases of dogs sensing cancer in their owners [https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=3CBGVM7tAuuq8wf0m4CwDg#q=dog+senses+cancer] and alerting them, whereas cats have just been like "Lol, im going to use your carcass as a litterbox the moment you drop *****".

I think, for once, we're actually in almost complete agreement about something.

I'd throw in that my cat managed to do the needy, desperate kind of thing on occasion though -- or rather the "I demand that you pet me, so I'm going to lay on your face until you do, regardless of what you might be doing or whether or not gravity is pulling in the direction of your face. If you remove me, I'm just going to come back until you play along for awhile.

Cat.

Dogs are great, but I know from how well I resonated with my first cat (definitely want another at some point in the future) and most other cats I met that they're definitely my kind of pet.

Cats are a wonderful pet to have as a roommate but in my opinion nobody EVER is more your best friend than a puppy you've raised yourself. I'm a dog person through and through even though I see the faults of owning one.

Just get a Catdog. Aka Japanese Spitz:

Cleans herself like a cat and has no odor.
Happy social personality of a dog and loves people+other animals.
Looks like some kind of fox. And foxes are clearly awesome.
