Character Creation

I was recently playing Soul Calibur 4 and while I was creating a custom character, I thought that it had a multitude of different options as to equipment, fighting styles, weapons, and skills, something felt missing. I thought about and then I had idea: the backstory! Soul Calibur 4 left out the reasons why my character got entangled with the rest of the cast. But then I realized that I playing a fighting game. I still create my own characters, but I feel like am filling a void with empty space. When I play Fable and similar RPGs, I could play without upgrading my strength, and play a character that is basically a walking stick but then I would have to constantly worry about being ambushed by one too many foes.

My question is this: Character creation is important, no doubt. But is there a time where character creation can go overboard or when character creation boils down to prefering one style or another? What genres could benefit from more character creation and customization and what genres should try to avoid character creation and customization? Could you name a few games that achieve a balance with character creation and customization without destroying a game's story?

The Elder Scrolls games, which are the king of character creation. Part of why I love them so much. You can do alot, and though some may be harder, know what you're doing and you can succeed. I know some who use this to make the game more fun to add a challange. Ofcourse you can always fix things later. Need to be better at a skill or risk doom? Train it and practice.
Also though, for backstory in SC4, just because they dont have it stored in game, you have your own head, or if you so desire, write it yourself. SInce character creation was added in 3 I had story for my characters as did my brother. Was alot of fun.

-Rock Band needs better customization in the hight/weight area. Why can't we be given the choice of going by feet/pounds instead of a bar that either makes you too tall/"fat" or short/skinny??

I think he amount of customization is good in Elder Scrolls games, but since your character doesn't ever seem to have any emotions it doesn't really matter. I think the KOTOR games did a good job of giving your character emotion and purpose but you didn't have much of a choice when it came to actually customizing them.

Soul Calibur 4 character creation added a couple things, but at the cost of true customization. Ever play number 3? Remember how you could have armor, a shirt, and undergarments?
Now the armor and shirt are grouped! It's retarded. They cut the actual clothing in half just to add simple meaningless body shape.
I did play SC 3 and it is easily the best Soul Calibur game because of the character customization. I spent weeks trying to develop characters and possibly churned one badass war veteran and my brother made an assassin that would be feared by other assassins.

I understand what you are saying, but let us say that I wanted to wield light weapons, like a short sword. I also want to be able to run around my enemies, slashing all the way. While this is going on I want to play with my future victims, keeping them alive long enough before I get bored and then leave, my victims fall into nice little cubes of meat. If I get too strong, I might not be able to play my victims, killing them in one shot. This makes me unhappy because I cannot toy with my victims. If I am too weak, the battle will drag out, increasing the danger my character is in if my intended targets catch on to my strategy. As for writing a story, Mortal Kombat Armageddon included a feature that allowed custom characters to have a story behind them. Custom characters in games that feature online battles should have a feature that allows people to take pictures of the characters and post them online. You might inspire someone to make your character or find ways to modify our design to fit their own image.

Pretty much.

If you play SC3, you get what the 4th lacks, and then some.

Yeah, big devs seem to have a thing for crushing hopes these days. Sign of the times, I s'pose.

Personally, I wouldn't mind an rpg or act/adv game with every PC being fully customizable, not just swapping costumes and skills. Bearing also decent replayability and art direction, of course.

I dunno...I found SC3's character creation system to be really its only good point. As far as the actual games go, SC2 is miles better.

Personally i think character customization can botch things up, respectfully it has it's advantages, but it soon becomes clear which combination of things you should pick right off the bat, as they offer the biggest bonus. This shows heavily in multiplayer games as everyone wants the edge, but i suppose i'm refering to rpg's more than anything here.

But OT, i have to say that Fallout 3 and Mass Effect i've found the best customization, since they offer a few things to choose from, but they aren't gamebreaking choices. Obviously replayability needs to be taken into account, so maybe large decisions are good in some cases.. The mind boggles ;)

I always try to create myself when it comes to these games. Some are harder than others. In Fallout 3 I made a spitting image of myself, as I did with SC3. Oblivion was impossible though because of a lack of glasses.

Call me a narcissist, but I enjoy seeing myself in a game like this. I consider it practice for if something like the game happened in real life.
