I was recently playing Soul Calibur 4 and while I was creating a custom character, I thought that it had a multitude of different options as to equipment, fighting styles, weapons, and skills, something felt missing. I thought about and then I had idea: the backstory! Soul Calibur 4 left out the reasons why my character got entangled with the rest of the cast. But then I realized that I playing a fighting game. I still create my own characters, but I feel like am filling a void with empty space. When I play Fable and similar RPGs, I could play without upgrading my strength, and play a character that is basically a walking stick but then I would have to constantly worry about being ambushed by one too many foes.
My question is this: Character creation is important, no doubt. But is there a time where character creation can go overboard or when character creation boils down to prefering one style or another? What genres could benefit from more character creation and customization and what genres should try to avoid character creation and customization? Could you name a few games that achieve a balance with character creation and customization without destroying a game's story?
