Why is it that most games nowadays are lacking in the cheating department? I'm guessing it's because they'd interfere with achievements, and make them easier to unlock. However, games could always go the way GTA4/Mercenaries 2 (and some other sandbox games) did, blocking certain achievements that pertained to the corresponding cheat.

Hell, I miss the days of,
"R1 R2 L1 X LEFT DOWN RIGHT DOWN LEFT DOWN RIGHT UP"

(Coolpoints to whoever can name the game that cheat belongs to.)

I'll admit. I preordered Duke Nukem Forever JUST so I could get big-head mode.

One thing I've always hated though. Single-player games that include cheats, but force you to UNLOCK them (i.e: Uncharted 2). I don't know why, but it's always been a pet-peeve of mine.

But seriously. Who doesn't like infinite ammo and flying cars?

In my opinion, cheating is silly, the kind you have to unlock, less silly.

And, I guess I don't like infinite ammo and flying cars *shrug*

I'd say one of the main reasons there really aren't any more cheat codes in modern video games is that they're a lot easier now.
I remember some games that were hard as hell, and the cheat codes gave people who didn't want to put the effort into beating it properly could still beat it in there own way.

I remember the days of PS1 and PS2s and their cheats.

I wonder the same thing too. It's all because of achievements.

Isn't that the money cheat in the GTA games? :p I used it quite a bit back when I just wanted to piss about.

And yeah, I'd like to see cheats make a return in games (obviously not in competitive online) cos they added a little something extra for you to do if you were bored or didn't want to do missions to get stuff. It's not like it's impossible for developers to do it either, what with - like you said - GTAIV and Saints Row disabling achievements when certain cheats are on.

Also my favourite secret code thing was on Spyro where if you put in the code you could play on part of one of the Crash games.

I believe san andreas, though I may be wrong.

OT; yeah I liked it in those days, say what you want about cheating being wrong or silly but mindless blowing stuff up on GTA or skipping to the better levels in sonic without having to unlock or slog. Lets face it games are about fun and someones idea of fun may be just take all the challenge out with codes and doss about.

Some games have cheats. But they usually just unlock levels or something. I know Black Ops has a cheat that let's you unlock all the campaign and zombies maps plus an easter egg zombies map.

It's probably because, at least in my and probably a few others opinions, console cheats involving the tapping of buttons and swooshing of the movement toggles are a bit cumbersome. GTAIV solved that, along side the achievement disabling, with the use of cell phone numbers to achivate cheats.

And I love cheats. One of the best parts of The Sims 2 for me were the SuperUberMegaPowerful cheats included. If you have the game, control shift C and type in "boolprop testingcheatsenabled true" exactly as written minus finger quotes, then ctl/alt click on a sim. A whole new world is unlocked. The lack of this kind of stuff in Sims 3 is part of what made Sims 3 disappointing.

Plus the LazerBear/FlyingHippo cheats in Age of Mythology and Monster Truck/George Crushington cheats in Age of Empires III were nice touches.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play The Sims 2 and use the Rodney's Death Creator cheat object to cause a sim to drown in his own rug.

... And yes, perhaps there is something wrong with me. Oh well. *shrug*
