A few days ago, a friend and I had a argument about the new Silent Hill game coming out. I thought it was going to be good, but he thought it was going to suck. We talked, and he said that they should make a new Silent Hill game with original story, harder difficulty, better graphics, and more wierd sights that wouldn't hurt you, but just be there to scare you.
I then sayed that it would be cool if the main character was a child, because in horror games, it dosen't really show anything that happens to kids. (Well Silent Hill did have kids, but you know) He then said that playing as a child would be cool because the child would not be ready to fight, so if he/she tried to hit a monster he/she would soon get tired, and the game would make you need to think about how you would deal with monsters.

So would a child be a good character for a silent hill game? Do you think Silent Hill SM will be good? What are your thoughts?

Sounds like it could work but the way we are about acting around kids today would prevent it
I love your avatar. :]

OT: It would most likely be a good game, but since people nowadays overreact for almost everything it would probably never happen. :[

A Silent Hill game with an original story wouldn't really work, because the Silent Hill series has expectations (brooding pasts, dual worlds, Silent Hill) which are more or less necessary for the full Silent Hill experience. I don't give a damn about graphics and difficulty is a moot point while GameFAQs and all the other million billion walkthrough sites still exist. As for sights there purely for the scare of them, the feeling of vulnerability is important for fear (something would be a lot scarier with, say, your pants down) and to have a bunch of things you are invulnerable to would make that nonexistent. A few of these would be good, but not too many.

OT: I'm very much looking forward to SM, but I wouldn't like a child player character. Firstly, because most Silent Hill protagonists thus far have been White Males with issues, and most gamers are White Males with issues. They are easy to relate with and therefore easier to feel for when everything goes to hell. Secondly, I'm ninety percent sure that at some point the kid would say, "What's going on? Mommy? Daddy?"

How about a hemophiliac for a main character? If he gets a paper cut he dies. :D

OP:That's an okay idea but I think combat would be impossible, I doubt a child could swing a stick hard enough to cause any damage to such creatures. It could be a guy about James' age but with asthma, making him tire easily and suffer from asthma attacks. Although I found the combat in Silent Hill very easy, not graceful, but easy.

Children don't possess the requisite level of sin to play a Silent Hill protagonist.

If your friend is looking for games with scary visuals that don't actually hurt you, I'd recommend Ju-On the Grudge on Wii.

Neither did Heather, for that matter. But she was one anyway (plus she was seventeen, and thus technically a "child").

That's totally different, and not an angle they can take again soon. And 17 is not a kid in the same way that 7 is a kid.

Imagine a 7-year-old girl trying to shoot a pistol at some freaky zombie-thing. That would be funny, especially when the gun kicks back and hits her in the head, causing a twenty-minute crying session, which causes the zombie-thing to just walk away from her in pity (And the player to beat his head against the wall while saying "Shut up. Shut up. Shut up.")

I've heard a few stories about older siblings who smother and suffocate their younger siblings, because they want to be the focus of mummy's attention.

A child wouldn't see the monsters remember Laura in SH2?
Well, I think she was just a vision or a ghost or somthing[/quote]

Nope. Laura is a real person, she doesn't see the monsters because there's nothing in her to produce them, as are Angela and Eddie, Angela definitely sees the monsters and alternate town, Eddie might but we don't really see much into his mind. Maria is a product of the town, the rest are all real.

Isn't the average SH protagonist useless enough :)

Seriously, I can't picture a) a kids being of the right mindset to be draw (some are guilty enough, but one with the right pathos would be too rare a thing to fit in with the idea that these are normal people stuck in SH) and b) would they really understand what is going on or even know to be afraid (a friend's kid thinks loads of the old Lovecraft stuff is really cute).

A child from a very abusive background might have some weird sh1t conjured up when they enter Silent Hill, as the town also preys on your fears. It would make for some freaky monsters.
How old was Alessa when they incinerated her? Admittedly she was half-fused with the demon Sammael but she was a kid and look what happened.
