Right Wing: Stupid religion.

Left Wing: Don't infringe on religious rights.

I honestly don't know which one to hop on so I'll just answer with this

God bless :D

Why cant you just see that these "pastafarians" are just a bunch of attention whoring atheists who are simply just trying to give Christianity the finger by claiming their "history" (the bible) is a bunch of baloney based on hear-say?
Cos I make my own opinions and don't agree with you? And especially when you make massive generalisations and assumptions.

Most of them probly believe in the Spaghetti Monster. Just cos they don't believe in Christianity doesn't make them Athiests dude and I really don't think that a religion with over a thousand members are a bunch of attention whores doing it for the lulz.

I'm an athiest so it's not like I think THEY MUST LOVE GOD LOL because I don't. They can do whatever they want as long as it's not some nutty whacked out sacrificial thing.

If the school doesn't allow hijabs why they shoudln't allow pastafarian pirate costumes, however if they do allow hijabs.....

This Child [http://www.newsique.com/us/student_punished_for_spaghetti_b//] was suspended from school for coming in in full pirate attire even though it's a key part of his religion.

I think that I may just convert to Pastafarian just for this.

What do you think and why?
School is in the right. If a Christian came to school in full priest regalia, he would get the same treatment for disrupting class.

Why?
Because the entire religion is a made up religion, the entire point is to make fun of other religions. It is fine if you want to make fun of religion, especially the things that they do sometimes, but you can't interrupt a school day to do it.

actually you can, because the school day is stupid, and if what the school does violates his rights, even because of a disruption, they're still wrong.

and they still shouldn't have messed with him. it's just wrong.

I can see why he was suspended, as it seems to me that it is obvious that this being a "religion" was simply an excuse.

Wow funny that people think rights apply to the public schools, the SCOTUS has ruled countless cases that pretty much give schools the discretion to do as they please. And a parody religion certainly has nil protection as far as what the courts would allow.

My religion "defensism" requires me to wear a gun at all times...

Courts will uphold a religious statement provided it is not disruptive, not to mention it's hardly a legitimate belief. So schools in the right.

Er..what? Pastafarianism was created as a parody of Intelligent Design. It was made clear from the beginning that its intent was not to mock religion in general. Get your facts straight.

OK the Pastafarian thing is a parody of organized religion. Yes it sets a bad precedent but I'd send the kid home. I recognize that it opens the door to disallowing other things people do for religious purposes but Pastafarianism is not a religion it's a send up of organized religion.

I don't take the religious persecution defence of this any more seriously than I did FSM'ism itself.

But I did take FSM'ism pretty seriously insofar as it is a clever (if disgustingly smug) farce which holds it's own in the argument against ID-in-schools.

I think the kid is acting out, so he should tone it down. But the school's response was inelegant, and betrays a lack of style schools can display when butting up against dissenting opinion.

The principal shoulda declared a week of pirate-attire, studies of the political climate which gave rise to privateers etc. and essentially drowned the kid in his supposed individuality. :)
