Haven't played them but i've been looking into them myself.

From what i've found, War of the Roses doesn't have many players and isn't new player friendly.

Lots of folk recommending Chivalry though.

Haven't played them myself but Total Biscuit gave a nice in-depth review of those two compared to each other:

This is how I know I've been in academia too long: I came in here expecting to find a discussion of knighthood in the 15th century.

War of the Roses has many strong points such as its archery, calvary, incredible customization, and graphics; however, if you're looking to buy the game mainly for the melee, Chivalry is definitely where you want to go. Chivalry's melee is just far more intuitive, visceral, and satisfying. Personally, I would recommend you go with both as I very much enjoyed both. I go to Chivalry for melee and WoTR for the awesome calvary action. Just wait until they go on sale for 75% off. Chivalry might not be discounted that much, but WoTR very likely will. Both games are great though.

It's somewhat difficult to tell how full the servers are on chivalry, because the official servers they set up have this annoying feature where they say a server is pretty much full, but when you get on, you find there's only like 3 people on the server. It's very weird.
