This is a subject that I might get some flack for, but has anyone ever bought into the hype generated by big-name titles even when they knew it was over-hyped? I an example, as I'm really excited by Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire even though they are just another set of Pokemon games which, by all accounts, is the same as the other Pokemon games.

I got fooled once by the play-slaves and kind of bought Killzone 2... since then, I listen to no one.

Im letting myself get hyped about The Witcher 3 even though i've seen nothing of it's actual gameplay and know little about it.

I enjoyed the Witcher 2 though so I imagine i'll enjoy this one but im still getting hyped just from the hype created by the community.

GTA IV, I had played San Andreas so when this was announced I hoped aboard the train and even a part of my mind was saying "That looks a bit bland, where's all the colour, does that really look fun?" I ignored it and bought it some time after it came out.

I had to force myself to just get through the main story, didn't really bother with the side quests.

After loving the shit out of Dragon Age Origins, I was pumped for DA2. So much that I ignored the fact that the demo was set on Shit Mountain, and that the game looked like a pile of ass. I bought it at full price, and I only played through it once.

Same story here, totally trusting them now, their the last developer/publisher that I'd expect a backstab from, lets hope the only shining hope doesn't shit on our faces.

To answer OP's question though, Dark Souls 2. I know its a good game, but good = rubbish for a Souls game. Where's that sudden realization that the whole world you're exploring is somehow connected in such strange and wonderful ways that you never even think about fast travel until close to the end of the game where it happily obliges?

Or how about releasing a product with all their hearts poured into it, announcing DLC only almost a year later in tandem with the PC version release, of which said DLC is given for FREE? Instead they now release a season pass weeks before the first DLC arrives, indicating their plans for much more to come.

What about some genuinely original ideas instead of riding the back of the first game and excusing it through lore? Anything different about Dark Souls 2 from the original was borrowed from Demon's Souls with few exceptions.

Sigh..

I dont buy into any now or at least try not to I am content to wait now I only recently bought Skyrim legendary edition yesterday because I could finally get it all for under 10 pounds.

That said a main Soul Calibur game always gets me hype I just cant help it cmon make a SC6 already and kill that piece of junk software called Lost Swords (just keep the models).

Hm...I'm not sure. I think the biggest would have been Aliens: Colonial Marines. I bought that at launch, even though I saw the warning signs and my friend told me it was getting terrible reviews. Of course, I wasn't going in expecting greatness, so I didn't get completely burned, but still...

I guess Mass Effect 3 was the one that hurt me the most, and as such, I'm very leery of BioWare's Mass Effect team right now. And that stupid video they showed at E3 did nothing to ease my doubts. Which means I'm trying really hard not to get psyched up for Dragon Age III. I see all the same promises, all the same claims, everything that they also promised with Mass Effect 3...but blast it, I'm still getting excited about the game. I didn't think Dragon Age II was all that bad, so to me the series is still worth it, but if it goes the same way as Mass Effect, I fear I may be done with BioWare.

I got on the Last of Us hype train..... which then derailed because I found it pretty boring.

I guess I'm aboard the MGSV and Pokemon OR/AS hype trains, but I love both series so I assume I'll be content with them, hopefully more than just that.

I don't tend to respond to pre-game hype... Videos and screenshots are vain, biased affairs, however, I do somewhat get caught up in hype over games post-release and sometimes when they are a bit older.

I bought the Spider pack on GOG yesterday, and delver on Steam just because people were talking about it in a group on here... and back along I remember buying Sleeping Dogs on a whim because I had read that some people I trust like it!

I hate the function on steam that tells me who plays games I look at, because it nearly makes me get it every time! :S

I'm rarely getting caught up in other peoples hype, as i know my own taste and know that it differs a great deal from the mainstream. But i once let myself hype over Red Dead Redemption, even though i knew that i hated Rockstar and their brand of sandbox games and predictably enough i ended up being dissapointed. Now i mostly hype myself on games that know caters to my taste, such as Devil's Third and Guilty Gear Xrd, but it's a mild hype since i'm not surrounded by people who expect these games to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I will also admit that i could easily get caught up in the hype for MGSV, but i'm avoiding reading about it to make the wait more bearable, so the hype is under control. Oh and once upon a time i was so hyped for Turok Evolution that i paid full price for it (I had more money back then... Nowadays i would never pay that much for a game), worst purchase ever! But i lied to myself and tried to enjoy it anyway...

First game I've felt hyped about in a long time is the Grim Fandango remake. I got sorta hyped about South Park: Stick of Truth when it was first announced, but that'd died out pretty quickly. I'm still pretty stoked about GF, though.

I can pick this up for £3 - £5 in many places now, is it worth picking up at that price even if it is to experience the awful?

Well, I recently wrote an essay about how The Last of Us got a lot better after it had disappointed me and had been released from my crushingly high expectations.

I was really hyped about Watch Dogs until a couple of weeks before release and then stuff started leaking out about it which pretty much poured water on my expectations. Decent reviews actually got me to buy the game at launch. I regret that now.

I got on board the (admittedly fanbase exclusive) Black Ops II hype train and that turned out to be great. Well if you need to understand why that should count: when even the fanbase reacts to Ghosts with a colossal "meh" you know something will go wrong with the finished product, and boy did that go wrong on almost every level.

No Black Ops II wasn't the reinvention that was CoD 4, but it was the closest to it we're likely going to get (unless Treyarch tries doing it again in 2015).

I've only been let down by one of my pre-orders, and I wasn't even hyped for Halo 4 so I'll let that pass.

There are a lot of games I'm looking forward to but it's more of the cautiously optimistic/wait-and-see kind. Hype trailers and (empty) promises don't really do anything for me. I know its pushed by marketing departments(its a business after all) but trying to overshoot like a lot of these publishers do tends to backfire as well, often reflecting badly on games that are otherwise good.

Anyways the one game I'm unbelievably hyped for is Arkham Knight. Rocksteady's previous Arkham games are probably my favorite games of last gen, and this one seems to be their best game yet. I know I shouldn't have such high expectations but...but...I can't help it! :p

For me it was Crysis 2. I enjoyed the game, no doubt about that, but it really doesn't hold a candle to the first and I didn't feel the need to play it more than twice, unlike the first which I will still boot up and play through from time to time.

I was really really hyped for Brink when they first had that trailer for it.

And then I got it (full price, mind) ans it was just all around....meh.

I was actually pretty upset about that at the time.

I try not to get hyped about upcoming games, but dammit if I don't get excited every time I hear the word "Halo" combined with some other word(s).

Totally bought into the hype for GRID: Autosport, too. Time will tell if pre-ordering was a mistake.
