There was a time long ago when I played World of Warcraft rather excessively. I would play any moment I had free time. It didn't matter if I had work in 20 minutes or not. As long as I could squeeze in one last Heroic or a final daily before I absolutely had to leave, I would take that chance. It often caused me to be late more than a few times, to which I deeply regret. After unsubscribing for almost a full year, I rethought much of what I have learned in that time and how my priorities have shifted.

World of Warcraft is a fun game, and I by no means wanted to stop playing due to a reason such as that. So, to counteract this, I did what any sensible person would do: deleted all of his characters in order to start fresh with a game that I love.

Now, I played a Rogue extensively in the past, so much that he became my main and can pretty much play one with my eyes closed. I wish to have a change of pace, and new adventure, if you will.

Want I would like from the community and fellow WoW-players of the Escapist is various opinions on what they think would be a preferable alternative to playing a Rogue. To state once again, I have no present characters, and merely want to start anew, fresh, due to the Cataclysm.

I already have my preferable race chosen, but any suggestions would be better appreciated here than reading an endless tower of text over at WoWWiki, that's for sure. Being that I am used to the close-combat, fast-paced action of a Rogue, I want something that will seem collected and different that what I have done in the past.

Any pointers, Escapist?

There is no preferable alternative to the rogue. Especially if said rogue is goblin!

But if I had to recommend something else, I'd say warlock. It'd make for a completely different game style than what you've played before.

Also note, my main has always been a shaman. For Zul'jin!

It's all up to you, really. I've only started playing World of Warcraft fairly recently, but my main is a Tauren Paladin (Protection, secondary Retribution) and I'm quite enjoying it.

I have a secondary as a mage, but it feels more annoying than anything. That may or may not be to do with the fact that some Blood Elf starting areas are completely over-saturated with quests (some of which are seriousely taking the piss), though.

I'd say any caster would be a nice change of pace, other than maybe mage. mage might be too similar with the cc. If I had to suggest one I would say either elemental shaman or warlock.

What bonuses do humans get? I play horde cuz that's what all my friends play, and I love blood elf. Nothing like having more silence. lol.

I tried fire mage, it was horrible. Then again, that was solo and instancing; you generate so much threat that you'll get owned in instances, and you don't have any armour or crowd control attacks as fire spec, so you get trampled.
I used to love battlegrounds as a prot paladin, could take like 5 people at once because of the huge health and dodging skills...apart from those dirty frost mages.

It's been like a year since i last played, but there was this skill that lets you break out of any attack that leaves you stuck (3 minute cool down). Then there was a 10% increase to rep gains, which i liked, and there's the fact you're a human, and not some dirty man-whore-elf-thing.

Humans get a bonus to both one- and two- handed swords and maces, which is basically every Paladin weapon.
Didn't stop me from choosing Tauren, though.

..okay, my friends play Hoard as well, but I don't think I'd want to have an Alliance character any more anyway.

Yeah that is quite a problem in instances if you do not have a good tank, at later levels you can at least use Mirror image and Invisible but I often just end up spamming scorch if I do a random hc

I'm starting to think a Warlock is the way to go. I've been looking at the class for a while, dark magic and demons look very different from mashing 3 buttons as a Rogue and then receiving an "I Win" button.

I've never been into PvP due to Paladins, heh. Damn near impossible to kill.

And they get Every man for himself which is quite like a pvp trinket

My main is a Shaman, and while it's fun, if you're going for cutting edge raiding then you're out of luck. Shaman are the red-headed step children of Blizzard, and it's been that way since Wrath of the Lich King.

Although lately my guild has been doing Alt runs and i'm getting to play my Death Knight tank, and i'm considering switching mains. Death Knight's are freaking fun. You get a ton of buttons as a tank, your gear looks awesome, you can solo old raids better than any other class, and you get to spread disease to your enemies. It's sort of like a cross between a Warlock and Warrior. The only downside is that since they start at 58 you don't get to see any of the new leveling content, and you go straight into Outlands, which sucked back in Burning Crusade.

PvP is actually a lot better now than it used to be. Arena is still a pillar humping suckfest, but in battlegrounds any class can do well.

Haven't played my Lock since the end of Wrath, but I loved Demonology.

Well since you played a Rogue you already know how to play a DPS so with that in mind I would go with a 'lock. Not only are they extremly cool to play but they are a really nifty class and therir specs are suited for all types of players: raiders, pvp'ers and rp'ers. I will admit my 'lock is my main but I have alts as a Rogue, Shammy and Hunter but I always come back to my 'lock as he is really fun to play with and flashy enough to make the n00bs stand in awe of his awesomeness so aye... Locks FT-fuckin-W.

EDIT: Don't pick a goddamn Pally, the world is a bad enough place without another goddamn bubble basher kickin around. God I hate Pallys.

I can only play for a few months at a time before I get burnt out but it would seem to me that your best bet is playing a caster. Try a different roll altogether though...maybe a healer?

Go druid. Druids are badass at everything. Roll Resto with feral tank as an offspec to try both rolls you haven't really tried. Failing that, you've always got feral dps to fall back on if you miss your rogue ways.

N....Nyhm? Is....is that you?

*faints*

Yeah, based on the comments here and my personal understanding of the game overall, I'm going to go ahead and go with a Warlock. They seem like fun, and can be played by a variety of races to choose from. That's a plus, I suppose.

I also would love to actually succeed at PvP, but for the longest time, even since Vanilla, I've just been terrible at it.

Go figure, I suppose.
