Choosing/Making a new avatar..

So how do you make, or choose your avatars? I mean, why do you pick the ones you have now?
Does it hold significane, or did you just think it looked cool?

Or did you let your creativity run wild and you made it yourself? What drove you to do it?

I mostly choose them based on what site or forum or whatever I'm on. Since this is a video game (mostly) forum, I decided to go with a picture of one of my favourite and most nostalgic video games: Gothic 2. On a music-based site, I'd go with the album cover art of one of my favourite albums, and so on and so forth. Things that are relevant, I suppose.

Well for this one, I love Community, saw this gif in a bigger size somewhere on the internet, and TimeLord shrunk it down to fit as my avatar =D

The general theme of my avatars is that it's from something that I really enjoy.

If I see a nice looking anime picture, I'll "vector" it (which is basically tracing it in a drawing program) and change the hair colour to blonde. Sometimes I change the colour of the clothing too.

Then I add a blue sky background, and it's done

Is it from something I like?
Is it of someone I like?
Does it look good as an avatar?

It must fit at least two of those criteria in order to be selected. Mostly, though, I'm not picky.

Is it from the Gangnam Style video?
Is it related to Scorpion King 3?

That's pretty much how I pick avatars.
And if it's a gif, I just crop the part I need, resize and away I go.

I usually switch my avatar every now and then from stolen DeviantArt images of Steins;Gate. It's my favorite series after all

Well, I stick to Black Rock Shooter avatars and GIFs. Because Black Rock Shooter is awesome.

Just make sure to let them know whether you're in pub-club or not.

I pretty much choose something that can turned into a gif and it has to be unique/ one of a kind. I hate it when I choose an avatar only to find out someone else had it so I loose my sense of individual.
Also I don't have the software to make an animated gif so I asked someone to make it for me which I thank them afterward.

Mine started out as a dragon I drew years ago,
since then it's gone through 4 redesigns
(and has apparently morphed into a cat dragon)

Then I added fire, because fire makes everything cooler.
I'll give it about a year before I redesign it again.

Most of mine will either be fractcal designs I make in GIMP, or something that tries to be as noticeable as possible, like the current one, or my dancing disco grunts.

I want a new one to take advantage of the larger avatar limit but don't have the time.

I made this one myself, It's a representation of me in Skyrim. I do most of my avatars myself, usually through Illustrator (I have more avatars like this one, stored on my PC, just waiting to be used)

I doubt i'll ever change my avatar to be honest... I like it too much. Maybe people wouldn't recognise me anymore if I randomly changed it anyway :3

Anyway I usually pick my avatar based on something that means something to me.

Well when I was going through the phase of just watching slashers I posted a picture of Jason Voorhees as my avatar so I pretty much just go with something related to my current fad.

Right now I've been posting a lot of pictures with Nicolas Cage in and thus I have a Nicolas Cage related avatar.
