The movie industry has to date a rather heavy amount of death in it's content. Going through movie history we have seen great actors come to life then die in agony. There have been all kinds of great deaths, deaths that made us cry, death that made us shudder in disgust and deaths that made us scream out in horror.
For me personally my favourite death is the chestburster in Alien, can't go wrong with the classic.
What do you think is the greatest big screen fatality.

I like the ending of Von Ryan's Express. Sinatra's character, Ryan, betrayed his men, then hatches an elaborate plan to evacuate them from the clutches of the Nazis by hijacking a Nazi train. They pull it off but Ryan's left behind while defending the train. As it pulls away, Ryan runs after it but catches a bullet in the back. He dies a hero and the movie ends.

The ending of Bridge over the River Kwai also comes to mind, where just about everyone but a couple of the POWs actually survive. Having their commanding officer fall over the trigger for these bombs rigged to the bridge, just as a train of POWs is going across it is somewhat overly dramatic but one of the two surviving POWs looking on going 'This is madness!' just about sums up the two hours worth of film insanity.

When Sam the Dog died in I am Legend. I though that was the best scene i'd ever see Will Smith act in.

Transformers: The Movie (1984)

The death of Optimus Prime.

"One shall stand and one shall fall."

Actually, both of them fell. But you know. The music when the heart (?) monitor flat lines is tragedy incarnate.

In the Usual suspects when

Verbal shoots Dean Keaton

Althought it could be held up by the realisation that you were wrong and that

Verbal is Keyser Soze

Maybe that was just me though.

I really like the usual suspects but my favourite death in a movie is probably the guy in robocop. He's swollen from all the radioactive stuff then gets run over and explodes all over the car. Like the flood or something. Simply awesome.

I wouldn't say 'greatest ever' but it sure was a fine one, the scene that opens 'Cube'.

If I remember rightly they said they spent about half the budget on that one scene, but it was worth it!

It's a fine example of a shock to draw you into the movie, and it explains a few things early on without needing words.

Warning tho, it's not a nice way to go, which is why youtube put an age check on it!

There's actually far 'nastier' deaths in Cube and it's prequel, however, this one is iconic for the series and actually makes for a good introduction to the concept of the movie.

I'm now wondering which way this topic will go, 'best' death in terms of how it fit the movie, or just descend into a gorefest...

In 'Children of Men' when that dude with the dreads is finally killed by a tanks .50 Cal.
Everyone who has seen the movie that I've spoken to, cheered when he died.

Dude.....not cool.

I guess my vote goes for V For Vendetta, when
V is killed in what has to be one of the most awesome last stands in cinema history, capped off with an explosive funeral of epic proportions. Those aspects of his death were balls-crushingly awesome, but it was also touching, Evey's reaction to his mortal wounds, and V finally letting go of his vendetta to love in the moments before his death.

Of course, the movie isn't faitful to the graphic novel, but I think that it's awesome enough to make up for that.
