So, I was thinking about picking up an MMO this summer, but I can't tell which I would like more. From the comments I've read, LotR has a much more mature fanbase, but CoH seems like it has wacky, crazy kinds of fun.

By the way, WoW, EVE and everything else is out. I've perused all the other MMOs and none of them catch my fancy. I played WoW for 3-1/2 years and just got tired of it. Friendswise, I could probably convince them to buy or at least trial either one.

So, what are the merits of each?

City of Heroes has a ton of new fan made missions. I don't know anything else though, according to some people I've talked to it's turned into a ghost town.

I haven't played either, but keep in mind when taking advice that a fairly large portion of escapists migrated from LotR in the first place.

City of Heroes is silly, silly, silly ammounts of fun. It's also the only online game I've found where team make-up doesn't matter - 8 Tanks will do just as well as 8 Damage Dealers, if slightly slower :) Also, the character customisation is both off the wall and completely irrelevant - my Tank was a 5' tall anorexic girl in jeans and T-shirt, and she can take (and dish out) exactly as much damage as something that looks like the Hulk in full body armour... It's all about making the character you want and then going out to beat stuff up.

Also, there are less players, but they're of a far higher quality than World of Warcraft :)

I'd go with CoH. It's simple enough to draw you in, but it actually gets challenging and deeper as you go along.

Also, you could get Jade Dynasty, I play it and it's really good (and free!).
