I am in a cast for the next few weeks and i figured now would be a good time to try an MMO. So I ask yu my fellow Escapists to help me pick between these 2. Issue 14 of Coh seems very interesting. But im also itrigued by the raids in Wow. since ill be starting at lvl 1 i want to know which one will keep me there longest and which one will jepp me interested after i hit the level cap... MMOs turn me off cuz of the fact that your character looks alot like ur frinds character but from what i hear these 2 differ in that geratly my main questin which one is worth my sub money for every penny.

For Clarification: I have played both these games, have an 80 in WoW, quit, now have a level 36 (currently) in CoV.

If you're just going for a trial, I'd say CoH/CoV all the way. WoW only gets exiciting from levels 58-80, and the endgame is boring unless you have time to raid or enjoy PvP. CoH is unique mainly becuase usually no two characters will look exactly the same (unless you act unoriginal and merely choose a standard set). CoH is also particularly good for its storytelling mission system. Unlike WoW's early quests which have ten different random strangers telling to go pick apples or club mana wyrms, CoH gives you distinct contacts with actually interesting storylines from the getgo (although some are admittedly less interesting than others.) All in all, I would recommend CoH.

A good single player game.
What is the appeal of MMO grind?
It all becomes meaningless at the level cap, so you start another profile, then another.
Then you are addicted and have lost months of your life and hundreds of dollars.

Aw, damn. You had to make me pick between my two favorites?Let's see...

City of Heroes is thus far peerless when it comes to character customization. Even just playing around in the costume designer is worth it, and the interplay of primary, secondary, and pool powers means your any given character is likely to be satisfactory. As well, with the fairly low level cap, the sidekick/exemplar systems, and the wonderful search interface, it's the most teaming-friendly MMO I've ever seen. It's also fairly free of the rigid character archetypes (DPS, Healer, Tank) of many other games. They're present, but they're not truly limiting factors, and many characters can pull off one or more roles related to damage and support...and that's just talking about heroes. Villain character types are even less bound, and thus far more self-sufficient. The game world is also decently large, and has some interesting locales, which the game helps you with by opening up both temporary and permanent travel powers early.

As for flaws...there's not a whole lot of variation in mission types, and if you're looking for PvP, this game probably isn't for you. There's probably more, but I'm a terrible critic.

WoW, meanwhile, places most of its customization options in its skills and professions, most of which are pretty fun. The world is huge and a blast to explore. There's also a ton of people playing it, and there are comparatively few instanced areas, so it's a socialite's dream.

On the other hand, CoH's teaming interfaced spoiled me, so I don't think much of WoW's. I also think the community puts way too much emphasis on the endgame's raiding and PvP. As well, the world may be large, but the game is fairly slow in giving out advanced movement options, so travel time can be a bore.

No problem. And if you purchase one game, you purchase both. CoH/CoV are the same game now.

The good part about CoX is the excellent community, no grind for absurd epic items (in fact, there isn't anything that can be called an "item" .. it's all skills, temporary powers and such). You can customize your character in many ridiculously cool ways .. and there's a supergroup base!

The bad part is that the game is pretty dated. I didn't mind the dated graphics, but I did mind the lack of players. You can often find completely deserted servers, and even finding a party around your level can be difficult. Find a good supergroup asap, otherwise you'll never get anything done. And then there is the variety in missions, or lack thereof. Once you've played one mission, you've basically done them all. There are a few different ones, but most of them will take place in the same warehouse, fighting the same cluttered together groups and the same generic boss at the end of the randomly generated warehouse.

I personally like WoW and found the combat in City of Heroes to be far too slow paced - but maybe that picks up as he get more skills, I'm not sure.

I would recommend trying them both - they both have free trials, in WoW your free trial doesnt let you advance past level 20, but thats still high enough level to see two or three of the game's instances, so you can try them and see if you like 'em. If you don't enjoy the 5 man dungeons, the 10 man and 25 man ones arent gonna be *much* better.

So yeah, try 'em both for free and see which grabs you most.

The /only/ thing World of Warcraft had going was a good story, and they ruined that.

City of Heroes is pretty satisfying in terms of gameplay.

But play both, get City of Heroes subscription

Then, click on your desktop repeatedly while watching Lord of the Rings and you've got the experience down pat on World of Warcraft.

WoW was fun for me for a few years but it never really delivered on the PvP aspect, the focus seemed to be on PvE. If you like to work together with people to bring down something that seems impossible WoW is a great game. As for me, well, I think raids are boring as shit. I don't want to wait an hour hoping people will show up and I'm all about killing other players in a multiplayer game so it was PvP for me. I quit a few months ago because it seemed like the PvP was going to hell in that game but thats just my 2 cents. Well back to CoD4 for me =)

Ha! World of Warcraft's combat will never look as good as the Lord of the Rings movies :p

City of Heroes/Villains mainly has combat, storyline and character customisation going for it. You make a character that you want, and it will stay the way you want it to look for the rest of the game, while in Warcraft, some times you'll look completely mismatched, and other times you look like everyone else.
The storyline always feels better, even early on you feel like you're making a difference, and the end-game mission arcs have objectives like "save the world!!", which just feels so cool.
Finally, combat in City of... is just so fast paced, it actually feels fun, even when you're just doing the same moves over and over again. I personally have a Mace tanker with invulnerable skin, so I'm not the flashiest fighter, but when my character starts knocking people about while a mate who can control wind stirs up a blizzard indoors and some dude we just picked up who can throw fire starts setting things alight as they fly through the air, it all starts getting pretty cinematic.

World of Warcraft is far, far bigger in terms of scope. The place is huge and varied, with a million and one different enemies to fight, before starting on the other faction. You will always have hundreds of skills, talents and professions to choose from, and internal character development is the name of the game. Sadly, if you want to get into the high-end raid groups, most of the skills and talents are either mandatory or banned, but I chose not to go in with that, and my Demonology Warlock is still great fun to play.
While in Europe at least, the only slightly underpopulated City of... servers mean that the friendly and intelligent player base will make up for it, I understand that some of the U.S. servers are barren wastelands, which leads me to my next point. People will ALWAYS play World of Warcraft. No matter your server or region, you will be able to go online and do something with other players. Stay away from Goldshire unless you're a level 80 Horde raid.
Warcraft also totally beats, hands down, City of... in PvP. If you're part of a decent supergroup, it is possible to organise supergroup battles both in your own customised bases and the battlegrounds (actual battles in the battlegrounds are lagfests, but a LOT of fun...), but in Warcraft, you just have to join a battleground queue and wait. Then PvP will come to you! Downside to easy PvP is the jackasses who follow you around challenging you to a duel until you start swearing at you (at which point they report you), or you accept, find they're twice your level and kill you.

There ya go, three upsides for each. I'd say Warhammer Online would be a decent middle ground between the two, but it has the minor downside of being even more dead than City of... :)

CoH is definitely a more interesting, unique game, but I've only played a trial.

If your real issue with MMOs is "everyone having the same gear/same look," then go with CoH. In WoW, I remember every Rogue on the server looked exactly the same as my friend, and every Warrior had the same ugly ass shoulders I had months before them.
