Classic Games You Still Play

Every once in a while I drag out my laptop and play WWF No Mercy, and I noticed that it's just as fun as some of the newer games I play.
So the question is, what classic games do you still find enjoyable to this day?

Classic, better than I've ever been...

I don't know, it depends what's a classic. Been playing just BF:BC2 and a bit of Portal 2 as of late, with the odd moments I've got to be on the computer.

I don't have a nostalgia monocle. Games are generally getting better. But as for the question in question, I play Rise of Nations then and again, nearly just a decade old though, as well as Rainbow Islands on an Amiga emulator. Also been planning to perhaps play through Half-Life and the expansions, after about ten years.

When I can be bothered messing around with my graphics settings I quite enjoy a little game of majesty or my all time favourite game ever, simon the sorcerer.

I whip out "The Lost Vikings" on the ol' sega genesis; still get stuck on puzzles to this day.

Every so often I get this itch to play anything pre-Dreamcast. It's primarily my Genesis, but I also play the crap out of my N64.

Also, there's this silly 3D fighter on the N64 called Fighter's Destiny(?). It's got great mechanics and combos are much easier to pull off there than other fighters.

I still play Duke Nukem Forever

Command ad Conquer: Tiberian Sun.
An excellent game, and we sometimes play it at LAN parties.

Fantastic, another fellow Simon fan. It's a fantastic little game, I remember playing it along with my dad a good 15 or so years ago, one of the first I really played and probably one of the reasons I got into gaming. Once I completed it though, I started up number 2, but it doesn't really have the same charm. It might just be getting into to, but after the first ½ hour I'm not really feeling it.

As for other classic games I play, Baldur's Gate 2 is always fun, there are still things to discover for me, even after having played it quite extensively. Also, one of my favourite games, Planescape: Torment I enjoy playing from time to time. The universes those two games are set in are just fantastic. I wish Obsidian would get the Planescape license and make another game. Chris Avellone even said that if they did, he would strongly consider doing that. It doesn't look all bright though, no one seems to know much about where the license is at the moment.

Oh, and Rayman! It's a great platformer, very, very fun and have recently been put up on GoG. I already bought it off PSN, so I don't think I'll be buying it again, but it's still very tempting.

I have a very, very long list. Most recently, I started a new game in Secret of Evermore.
Also, my two most commonly played LAN party games are Unreal Tournament (the one that came out in 1999) and Starcraft (The one that came out in 1998)... because they run on anything nowadays, and they both have so many mods (or maps, in Starcraft's case) that they can each be considered several dozen games in one.

Once in a while, I break out Total Annihilation, laugh at the occasionally hilarious AI (building a massive navy in a tiny lake) and find myself thinking its still such a great game; the maps are great, the units balanced and the soundtrack epic. Honestly, I think its still better than most large-scale strategy games today by a long shot.

Civilization 2; Starflight 2; Homeworld; Castlevania 1, 3 and SotN; Super Mario Brothers 3; Legend of Zelda; Legacy of the Wizard, Bomber Man; Tetris... I could go on all day.

Truly great games will always be great. Sometimes we can lose ourselves in the simple fun of them. Some can be a great way of looking at what made those games fun and seeing what we can emulate from them today.

During a recent replay of Starflight 2, I found myself thinking "Humanity is the new kid on the block. I'm flying around the galaxy searching for clues regarding a dangerous extra-galactic threat with mind-control powers that wiped out a massive galaxy-spanning empire thousands of years ago. I have to recruit aliens for my crew and negotiate with said aliens for information. There's even a basic conversation system. I travel to uncharted planets and dig for minerals. I am playing a decades-old prototype of Mass Effect."

Starflight was actually a bit deeper than Mass Effect in some ways. Every species feels differently towards you and reacts to different actions. You can't be nice to everyone and expect to get anywhere. Being hostile to everyone will get you killed in a hurry. The game had a (mostly) functional economy. I don't think SF2 was better; ME and ME2 are vastly superior if only because the writing, graphics and controls have improved over the decades. Still, I think Bioware could learn a thing or two by looking at SF and emulating some of that depth.

I've got a general rotation of old(ish) games that I play about once a year, such as Star Ocean: The Second Story, various Final Fantasy games, Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, stuff like that. New (old?) gems are added a lot though.

OOT was probably the first game I ever played when I was about 3 or 4. Loved it! :D
OT: I'm playing X-com nowadays. It seriously is as good as people will tell you it is.
