Well boys and girls listen closely. For i am about to the the story of how Technology became small and why it will only get smaller.

Cloud Computing is a rather fuzzy term that has no real definition, though it can be generally accepted that it refers to the outsourcing of data to the web. How this ties in with my story is that you don't just outsource data. I bet you are thinking of file storage right? Photo's, video's online servers... these are all relevant but data as you might think of it isnt the big fish here. No.

Its processing, think about it. Your calculator does its job by taking your inputs and commands and doing processing and output for you. Cloud computing means that you can outsource your processing to another, better computer.

Your laptop(provided the web infrastructure could support the data flow) could be as powerful as a desktop pc but as big as a mobile because not only does it not store its own information but it also doesnt even do any of its own processing past sending the neccesary commands.

Lazy little Bastards arent we? Even our machines and getting machines to do their work for them.

Apologies for any errors here. But from what i can see this is the future. The disadvantages im hoping you can come up with. Im so excited...

Cloud Computing, because in a world full of DDoS attacks, large-scale server leaks, and assholes on 4chan, nothing could be safer than to store sensitive data in a Web-accessible format.

Cloud Computing is why I am getting out of the IT world. 15 years in the business - Cloud Computing will just lead to less jobs.

Think I will go back to being a mechanic. Tired of being on the chopping block - management always trying to out source my job.

Is it strange that I imagined the last scene from Office Space?

Cloud Computing has interesting potential for the future - and would no doubt be more efficient, especially for big businesses; terminals linking back to a big central super computer mainframe that handles everything and all that jazz.

Thing is, I don't think anywhere has the infrastructure to handle it (you'd need a lot of fiber optics everywhere... manageable in, say, the context of a corporate HQ, but it's a lot of monies to hook up a country with it...) though it is coming, slowly, and in no way is the internet secure, stable and reliable enough for it to be a safe choice for serious businesses to run crucial operations over the web - imagine the potential for industrial espionage by intercepting a rival pharma firm's raw simulation data that they'd spent years developing... or something. It's all just less secure if it's all out of house.

Not to mention that DDoS attacks would actually stop you from being able to use your terminal, not just a website or service!
