I'm gonna pick up MW3 because I keep hearing how amazing it is. Could someone who has played the first two give me a brief tl;dr for the campaign plot of things I should know to understand the 3rd? Thanks.

Russia invaded the world... then they did it again. Also, Captain Price is cool, even if he's mentally unstable. He wears a boonie hat.

US Marines invaded an unnamed middle eastern country and were blown up by a nuclear explosion, whilst the SAS fought the ultranationalists in Russia, who ended up gaining ground politically and ruling Russia in MW2, a terrorist attack on an airport was blamed on America due to a dead CIA agent being left there by Makarov, the big bad, Russia then invades America, gets stopped in Washington by the US Army Rangers whilst a Special Operations Taskforce prats about, ends up discovering it was all an inside job by one General Shepard, and kills him somewhere in Afghanistan.

That's about the gist of it.

I think 'gun goes bang, man falls down, repeat a billion times' pretty much covers it. Oh, and there's a bit specifically designed to make anti-video game campaigners wet themselves.

Modern Warfare: Soap joins the SAS under Captain Price. They work behind the scenes in Russia to prevent the 'Bad Russians' from gaining power. They rescue an informant named Nikoli.
Meanwhile, the US invades a country in the Middle East because a coup has taken place, resulting in terrorists being in control of the region. The US goes in and finds a nuclear warhead, but fails to disarm it. You, along with your squad, are caught in the blast and killed.
Cut back to Soap. The SAS learn that Zakehav is behind the nuke and begin tracking him down. First they catch his son, but he kills himself. Wanting revenge, Z takes over a Russian missile base and launches nukes at the U.S. Soap, Price, SAS and US Marines disable the warheads from a computer and begin fleeing Russian forces. Z's army corners them on the bridge and kills everyone. Just as he's about to kill Soap, the 'Good Russians' arrive in time to help. Price, apparently dying, slides Soap a pistol and Soap kills Z. Game ends with a Russian standing over you saying, "You are going to be alright, my friend." Price appears dead on the freeway.

Modern Warfare 2: Things didn't work out in Russia. The 'Bad Russians' gained control and tensions are high. A new leader of the Ultra Nationalists (bad Russians) named Makarov wants to plunge the world into war. The CIA and General Sheperd send Private Allen (you) to sneak into Makarov's gang. After slaughtering civilians in an airport, Makarov turns around and shoots Allen, killing him. It's discovered that Allen is CIA, and Russian immediately declares war on the US. The US defenses have been hacked and they are caught completely off guard. The US campaign is spent mostly counter attacking after Russia invades the country. You also come across some clues as to what's going on with Makarov, but it's never explained really.
Soap is now the leader of Task Force 141, a special unit that answers to Sheperd. You place as Roach. Their goal is to track down Makarov. To do this, they discover that someone Makarov hates is being held in a Russian prison. They attack the prison to capture the person, but are shocked to find that it's Price. Price joins the hunt and, because the US is in danger of losing the White House, he launches a nuclear missile at the US. The resulting EMP blast knocks out all Russian armor and air, giving the US the break it needs to recover.
Sheperd sends Roach and a small squad to Makarov's safehouse, while Soap and Price go to another one. Roach and his team find tons of intel on Makarov and call for evac. When Shep and his men arrive, he kills Roach and his team, then takes the evidence.
Though never actually stated, it is implied that Sheperd was working with Makarov from the beginning, and that's what was in the intel. He did it to be a hero and get volunteers for the army by having Russia attack the US.
Soap and Price, now wanted men thanks to Sheperd's influence, decide to kill Sheperd. They hunt him down, and after nearly both being killed--Sheperd stabs Soap in the gut--they manage to kill Sheperd. Nikoli flies in and he and Price carry Soap to a chopper. The game ends with Price saying they need to get somewhere safe. Nikoli replies with, "D'ah. I know a place." Cut to black.

And there you go.

You played Battlefield 3 right?

Take that story and remove the flashbacks and you have MW1 and 2 warped up in one story. Add the flashbacks and you add Black Ops in the mix but same diff more or less. Terrorists, world war 3 the usual thing.

What?

The main protagonists in the Call of Duty series are both English.

You just described Mass Effect.
And every other game with a gun ever.
Jesus, if you're going to be a trolling douche, at least put some effort into it.

7 posts and already 2 not telling him the actual information, but confirming that CoD is indeed a shooter where you shoot things. Well done escapist!

OT: Well basically in 3 sentences. In the first game you kill the leader of an ultra nationalist Russian group, whilst a large number of US soldiers die when a nuclear bomb hits the un named country they are invading. Second game, a Russian madman Makarov gets vengeance for the events of the first game by framing america for a terrorist attack on a Russian airport. This leads to Russia invading America. The team from the first game try to find Makarov but are stopped when the general of the soldiers that got killed in the first game takes the intel they need and kills some of the team's members. The end of the game is the now wanted leaders of the team going to kill the general, they kill him and there pilot says he knows a place and the screen fades to black.

Damn, that was 6 sentences!

CoD 1 had Americans, English, and Russians
So did CoD 2
CoD 3 added Canadians
MW 1 and 2 have 2 British SAS members as the main protagonists. Playable Americans as well.
WaW had an American and Russian protagonist.

The only Call of Duty where you only played as an American was Black Ops, and even it had a bit where you played as a Russian.

The trick to enjoying the single-player is to abandon all pretense of realism. Have a sense of humor about it. Pretend like you're in the middle of a big, dumb Michael Bay movie. The games are so over-the-top that they're practically science fiction, just without the aliens and pulse cannons.

Price Is English, Soap is either northern English or scottish, so is Ghost(Gaz), and all the SAS. and tbh, I find them quite interesting characters :)

Actually you only play as an American in the missions that are clearly headed by the Americans. Its like saying that CoD 2 is bad because you play as Russians in the Russian Campaign. Also, there's Captain Price and Kamarov, two main good characters that aren't American.

The story in MW 2 is so backwards stupid that you really shouldn't bother, none of it makes any sort of sense according to what real humans do and actual physics, the first game has some dumb grunt US soldiers get nuked while the British undercover guys clean up and kill the guy responsible for it behind the scenes, it was well done, but again, MW2, no, just no
