This time made by the God Eater team. Kind of hoped it would have been by Fromsoftware when they showed that little animated teaser but still, I like the direction they are taking. Don't know what to think about the developer. I haven't played God Eater but apparently it wasn't really good. Still, I doubt Bamco would risk losing whatever momentum it gained publishing the Dark Souls games.

The name of the genre is 'dramatic exploration action RPG.' The 'exploration action RPG' genre has players tensely exploring seamlessly connected areas on foot, which offers a great sense of accomplishment. The team put a lot of thought into how it could improve on that formula.

Um...huh?

DARPG? EARPG? Are these actually sub-genres, or made-up terms? Because it's long since accepted that "ARPG" is a sub-genre of RPG, but exploration I'd have thought would come with most RPGs, except SRPGS.

Yeah, I think those are just developer concepts rather than being tangible genres. Make sense though since it highlights what parts of the game they should empathize most on. I guess the game concept should read as 'action RPG with emphasis on level design and atmosphere'. Since it's published by Bamco I think it's safe to say they want to continue the success of Dark Souls with a similar game from a different developer.

I do wonder what that means for Fromsoftware though. Does Bamco have a second action-RPG in development? Will Kadokawa extend it's distribution network and will From's next game be published by it's parent company? Or will it be another Sony exclusive? Hmmmmm.

Cool trailer.

Would love to see a game that actually used a visual style like that.

Makes me suspect that it's going to be anime crap though.

Just googled "god eater" and... yeah. Anime crap everywhere.

Yeah, my thoughts almost precisely. Vampires have been completely ground into insignificance with the liberties taken since creators realised they could just use them as window-dressing for profiting immensly off teen hormonal impulses. Plus i think its a little disingenuous of Bamco to piggyback Soulsborne's success in their marketing. But they have been a little bit detached in the past with their marketing direction. So not that surprised.

From is working on something else even if this doesn't pan out. I wonder if the name implies something along the lines of being a vampire in the digital/hacker age. That could be pretty cool. Like blood is the ultimate information source among other things.

Eh, the thing about God Eater is that it really rides the tails of Monster Hunter, but tries to make everything a bit more compact and faster and doesn't feel quite as satisfying as a result. Monster Hunter is already a super polarizing franchise about whether it's "good" or not. It's not a "bad" game, it's just not one that will appeal to everyone.

Anyway. Yeah, the trailer looks really interesting, I'm hoping the aesthetic won't change once we see actual gameplay.
