some hobbies are considered the norm, while other hobbies and collections are thought "sad"

I'm sure we all know that guy who collects Star Wars action figures, lines the walls of his room with them and may or may not unbox them. I know that guy, I really don't mind, though I like Star Wars I don't go near toys myself.

To be honest, I don't really think many hobbies qualify as sad. People do them for enjoyment, and if you enjoy something then sometimes that can be enough to make it worth doing. I don't like Football (Soccer) but I wouldn't call the people that play the odd game of five aside in the local park sad.

What's your unusual hobby/collection, and why do you like it?

I play Pokemon. Hardcore Pokemon. None of my friends understand it. The fact that breeding the perfect team involves math and hard work makes it fun for me.

Apparently games aren't supposed to involve math or make you think too hard.

People can't seem to grasp how competitive and deep the pokemon metagame is. It sucked away hundreds of hours of my life. I've forgotten more than most people know about pokemon (The gaming aspect anyway)
I had binders full of EV setups, team combos, counters...you name it.

in the words of Joel Hayman: "Math makes my thinker box hurt"

My hobby was triggered when I met a friend of mine, Andrew. We both have an interest in historical warfare. Particularly how weapons progressed through time in different cultures. We both love Deadliest Warrior. We've both begun collections of historical or cultural weapons (mostly replicas) out of academic interest. It's not like "ooh, knives make me cool" we just think they're interesting. (We collect within legal boundaries!)

I'm thinking of getting a Khukri...

I'm a Warhammer 40k man myself, but I don't get half as much stick as usual because I only really collect to model and paint these days rather than play the game.

Personally I don't see why anyone should have to 'justify' a hobby, since it's just a pastime that gives you enjoyment. Having said that, collections are a very different thing. [http://www.neatorama.com/2008/05/14/neatoramas-guide-to-25-of-the-strangest-collections-on-the-web/]

I wouldn't say it is unusual, but I don't know anyone else who does but I collect game guides for any game I get really. I have quite an alright collection so far.

I did that for a while. I still fire up Shoddy Battle from time to time in fact.

OT: Apart from that? If my friends knew the stuff I get up to when I get REALLY bored...this morning I played a 500 life Vampire match on Timesplitters: Future Perfect. It went on so long it broke the clock in the game, which isn't designed to go beyond 99 minutes.

I've also dedicated about half a year of my life to Football Manager at a rough guess (I might have to check out the actual statistics it keeps...and despair)

Yeah, I do see collections as being quite different. Though both fall under the same kind of flak from people.

My view is either that everything is sad, or nothing is. To me, there's no difference between knowing the detailed history of a comic book character and knowing the names and positions of all the players on a sports team, other than social acceptance.

My own geeky/sad/pathetic collection is a number of superhero related items (comics/games/animated TV shows/toys) as well as Doctor Who stuff (same stuff). I love all of it.

I like firearms. I like all kinds of them. I was just recently arguing with a friend about getting a Makarov. She called it a "Toy gun in some crazy Slav round" and I was like "That's why I need it!"

I collect obscure foreign firearms, some of which fire all but unknown rounds (such as my Arisaka type 99. Did you know they only current manufacturer of 7.7mm Japanese rounds is based in Sweden?)...
Also, swords. Functional, well tempered ones made of good steel (mostly either Asian or European Renaissance replicas).

My justification for the guns... well... I don't really have one. I like to shoot on occasion, and when I do, I like it when people ask me what the hell I'm shooting with. For the swords... cutting practice is good exercise. Helps keep normally underused stabilizer muscles strong.

.

**edit**
Also, my roommate is thinking about getting a Marakov. I think I've created a monster...
...and I prefer the .45GAP...

I still collect DVDs in spite of the fact that DVDs are dying and physical discs are on their way out as well. But I wouldn't consider it 'sad' because I know many other people still doing this as well.

Pro Wrestling
Don't look at me funny.
It's the sport of Kings and has more fans internationally than American Football or Baseball.
Besides, wrestlers are artists!
As I will be one day.
It's never been for rednecks...There are wrestling fans all over the world!
Every gender, every race, every religion and every economic background.
So there.

I play Neopets, and upkeep my account on a daily basis. I've played for about eight years now, but I sort of phase in and out for a while. I tend to come back around the Christmas season though, as there is an event during December where you get free goodies every day :) Of that eight years, I've probably spent a total of 4 or 5 years "on" while the other 3 years are periods of hiatus.

I used to collect the Sims 2 games. I had all the expansions until I sold them all to afford the Sims 3. Sorta miss it.

I collect figurines, as well, mainly glass figurines, but I have some porcelain dolls and a little zen garden + lot's more.

AHA! Threadwhoreing time! I collect and paint Citadel miniatures, as can be seen from this thread:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.191553

and my deviantart account:

http://scumofsociety.deviantart.com/

I statred at about 12yo and then gave up about 3-4 years later because I got bored of painting and because it wasn't exactly helping me get hold of girls. I've taken it up again now I'm 30+. If anyone laughs or considers it 'sad' I can point out that I've had more sex, drugs and rock and roll techno than them and all their friends put together and have lived the life of the cool and happening people and now find it and them thoroughly boring so I'll do what I bloody well please.

I collect wallets. I have no idea why I just do. Sometimes when I receive wallets from relatives there will be money in there so thats a plus.
