I stuck this on the iFanboy forum (a comic book webshow over on Revision3), but they're forums are insanely slow moving so I was wondering if anyone here can help me out? The post goes as follows:

Hi, I'm looking to get back into ongoing comics and can pick up about 12 a month so want to stick to just Marvel and DC (everything else I tradewait - I really prefer trades)
What should I be reading/where should I begin? I mostly want to cover current main events, so guess I'm going to be wanting stuff like Avengers, JLA, F4, XMEN etc.

So yeah, any help would be awesome.

Also, just so this thread can have something else to discuss, what was the last comic (or 'graphic novel', if you want to call it that ¬_¬) that you read? For me, it was Vol. 1 of 'Fables'...just read it. It's basically a really good crime book in a fairy tale setting given an adult twist. I gave it to my Mother to read and she described it as "Shrek for grown ups".

Thanks alot,

I would recommend the Green Lantern Comics written by Geoff Johns.

Green Lantern: Rebirth
Sinestro Corps War
Rage of the Red Lanterns
Agent Orange
Blackest Night
Brightest Day (This series is still going)

I hope that list is helpful.

Secret Avengers
Avengers
Hellblazer
Daredevil
Batman (Collector's edition)
Wolverine & Deadpool (Collector's edition)

Are the only ongoing series i collect, and i would recommend giving them all a quick once over, Hellblazer in particular.

As for the last comic i read, that would be watchmen, i meant to read it year's ago and i just go round to it.

Give "Power Girl" & "Deadpool" a try.

The last 2 graphic novels I bought were "Batman RIP" & "Batman: Lovers & Madmen."

I really liked the Ultimate X-Men comics. It starts off as a new storyline, so you don't need to go back like 30+ years to get to the beginning/start in a random part.

I've heard they are finished now, at 100 issues. Plenty to keep you busy for a while, no?

I've also heard that the Marvel Zombies comics are awesome, but its only 5 issues long.

Any current starting Avengers (Secret, New, Academy) comic seems promising, Hulk comics (pretty much any of them) Wolverine, Powergirl, Deadpool (any Deadpool series really, though Team up is hit or miss,) X-Men is gonna be starting a new run soon apparently too.
