Community college Honors Society; Yay or Nay?

I'm back in college, a community one, and have been for a year now. Been actually doing pretty well and I just received an E-mail from the honors society there, with a sort of invite/advertisement to join.

I just wanted to see if anyone had knowledge about honor societies, how much that really helps post-college, does it mean more/less because it's at a community college, is it worth it to you/friends/family, etc.

...They also want eighty (80) of my American dollar. That alone is a hella turn-off :|.

But before I shove it away, I rather become informed first from not-school people. Anyone can drop some information on me?

I've still need to ask the on-campus employees about what they know and do. From the mail, it pretty much seems like I'd be putting time into doing community service. I dunno if I need to take extra classes yet or anything (which is fine, due to a screw up, I need to go an extra semester for a single class =/).

Thanks ahead!

I have no clue what the professional repercussions would be of joining, but personally I think that it's kind of missing the point of graduating from a community college being art of an honor society. You'd probably be better of joining Mensa or a professional honors group.

My school has an honors program, but it requires taking specific honors classes at least once a semester. I also got an e-mail for a similar "Honors Society" (those are "bunny quotes") that cost money, and dismissed it as a scam. Someone in one of my classes, who I know doesn't have the best GPA, also received a similar e-mail. There's also the Dean's List, which is just a notifier of someone with a nice GPA.

I'm in an honor's society at my university for making Dean's List my first freshman semester. I had to pay dues once and go to the meetings to get some free pizza and hear about events we're doing. If I do enough community service hours I can get some honor's cords for graduation and it's nationally recognized so it looks good on a resume. I don't have to go to meetings or do any community service or even take any extra classes.

I think I had to pay something like $80 as well, but I think it's worth it.

Yeah, I've received stuff from Dean's List (or rather, called [Vice] Presidents list). Didn't even think about the scam side of it. Doubting it is, but a definite consider.

Man, you make it sound a lot sweeter than that E-mail. But I'll ask about any sort of nationally, or even locally, recognition. Thanks for that bit of insight sir/ma'am :)

My school had an honors program. There was a legit information packet that stated there was an upfront charge of 500 bucks a semester for... priority class registration and access to an extra building.

Incidentally, my English skill was good enough to merit an invitation to an honors English class. There was some dick-headed graduate student that tried to do his English by the book "read all this shit, analyze it, there's a stick in my ass, etc."

Naturally, I did poorly in that class and dropped to 101 where I had an older lesbian teacher and she was awesome.

It just goes to show that academic education has deteriorated to the point that kids can come right out of graduate school to get a job teaching people without actually having gone out into the world to bring back some experience and shifting of ideas. That's at least my take on it.

Big nay for Honor's Societies all around.

Also, it should be noted that I've never heard of them requiring money as academic excellence is usually the thing required to get in, but I'd check what they're called and see if it matches up to the honor societies at most other community colleges.

Also of course make sure you've got all 3.9 or whatever the high rate is so you know it's real.

I also got invited to some honors society or some similar crap, though I don't go to community college. I'm already in the honors program of my university though (which requires some harder classes, but doesn't cost anything), and when I got to the part where they asked for my money, I deleted the email.

I believe the honors society email said that the top 20% of the university got invited, which pretty much means everyone who tries to do well...obviously they're just trying to make money.
