Yes yes...this is another skyrim thread.

No, no, NO. Stop moving your mouse towards the close button, stop, now.

This thread is both answering a very common question and asking one; almost every man and his dog's second cousin Steve has asked the question "How do skyrim's companions die" (or something similar

Now, from my own experimentations; I gave this answer to a friend of mine:

"It's like the Doctor's (Doctor Who)regeneration process, he takes a certain amount of damage or something similar and then needs to regenerate. He is fine as long as this isn't interrupted, but if he takes damage from an enemy again during this process (or if he is stabbed in the back by an ally) then he is dead."

Now, apart from the bit where the Doctor changes physically, this has proven accurate through all my experimentations.

So, is this how you have seen it work? I want to know if it's an accurate answer.

Whenever I'm fighting and Lydia "regenerates", the enemy I'm fighting just ignores her, even dragons.
Also, off-topic, I love the way when she takes a lot of damage she says "No, not like this"
It's little touches like those that make the game even more immersive.

From my experience with my character's wife and faithful companion Lydia, she never dies unless I'm the one delivering the killing blow. For as long as she's on the ground regaining her strengths, she pose no interest to monsters and is invincible to NPC frontal-cone or AOE attacks, but dropping dead if you're careless enough to swing/shoot/cast in her direction.
