Hey Escapists,

Sorry about asking for tech help on the forums, I just don't really know where else to turn. I got a new video card on Monday (Asus Radeon 7850 HD). I installed it all and it worked just great, I got a wonderful framerate of 57fps on all of my high end games (all on max settings) and I was all happy and stuff.

Yesterday when I got home from college, I tried to turn my PC on and it just beeped at me. Literally pressed the button, all of the usual inside noise started occuring, and then I heard beeps. There was one long beep, followed by three shorter ones. Nothing happened on screen so I waited about 10 minutes for something to happen and nothing did. Well, I heard the windows seven start up jingle so I know everything else was functional, just for some reason I wasnt getting video.

I switched it off and on again, and I had the same trouble. I did that a couple of times and after I flipped it off at the wall and tried again, it worked. No idea why, it just did that time.

Anyway, got home from college today and same thing happened, it just wouldn't work. I flipped it a few times and now it's working (the same computer i'm posting this from).

Does anyone here know what is happening/how I fix it? I'm a bit sad right now, the graphics card was an expensive investment and it gives me such a nice performance, why is it being all lazy on me? :(

Thanks for reading,

I think the beeps are a message from the computer telling you what's fucked, I say think I'm not too sure. If I had to guess it might be a graphics card problem, it might not be connected properly or just on it's way out. The tech wiziz will have a proper answer for you, give it half an hour.

EDIT: I've done a google. The beeps are signaling a graphics card problem(depending on the manufacturer), possible problems could be that the card isn't getting enough power, slots might be playing up. But being honest I've not a clue.

Is the video card secured properly? If you hear other programs starting and no picture then it's the video card, your computer should be fine.

First of all do the dumbass check and make sure it's all plugged in properly. Then Google [your BIOS here] beep codes. Then once you found what it means google how to fix that error.

All my computer knowledge is from google so I can't help you more than that.

Ahhh....post error beeps. Such an old fashioned way to send a message. While the meaning can vary depending on who makes the bios, 1 long and 3 short usually indicate a memory problem. Pull the memory stick and re-seat them. If it continues, try using just one memory stick. If all works well, keep adding sticks until it stop working again. You've then found you bad stick of ram.

Okay people sorry for the slow response,

I think I may have found the problem. I opened it all up again and a friend suggested swapping the PCI-e slot it was plugged in to. Removing it, I noticed that the port it was previously in is actually warped. Warped as in the plastic(is it plastic?) has been stretched out a bit, meaning that the card wouldn't be properly secured inside it. I think this has been what was causing the trouble. Having swapped it into the other socket, it booted up without any problems. I'm hoping now that the issue is resolved.

Thanks for all the suggestions though :)

Also, I'll post here again in 24 hours when I know for definite if this was the permanent solution
